Trim problem

john lamon

Well-known member
So I took my boat out today for one last run before winter to try it after making a few changes (put it away for the year 3 times now) made a few good passes and got her up to 71.2mph on gps, as I was aproaching a wake from another boat I went to trim in and slow down and guess what? no trim, little bit of a bumpy ride but not too bad.

Anyways here's what I got, up always works and down sometimes work, usually just hear a clicking sound, I checked all the connections and everthing seems tight.... any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks

Check the cheap/easy stuff first:

Had the same thing happen on my XR6 years ago. After spending the money for a new solenoid (can't remember if it was the up or down), I found the little bullet connectors in the wiring harness on the RH side of the motor were not making good contact.

Pull and tighten and clean and reconnect the bullet connectors in your wiring harness. Might as well find them all and do all at once. See if that clears up your intermittant problem.

If that doesnt cure it, us an ohmeter and check your up/down trim switch. Might be starting to go bad.

I had the same issue with my mate,
Clean each electrical connection on the trim system. If you hear the solenoid clicking you could most likely just have a bad connection.
So start with the solenoid you hear (and feel) clicking when you hit the switch but the motor does not move, remove the two main lugs on it, clean them really well to make sure thay are making good contact then try the tilting the motor up and down again it should work.
As far as the rest of the connections It may take a little while to get them all but you will have everything you need out to do it and it will all be worth it in the spring.
Remember grounding connections are just as important as positive connections. I seal all my connections with "liquid electrical tape" to keep moisture out.You can get it just about anywhere they sell automotive supplies.
Please post back and let us know how it works out.:thumb:

Tried cleaning the connections with no luck so replaced the solenoid and works great, thanks for the info, It's great to have a place like this to ask for help instead of calling a boat shop and their advice is bring it in so we can charge you a bunch of money.:)
