83 Enchanter with 225 efi ob setup tips

Hey guys I just discovered this forum and its awesome. I currently have an 83 enchanter with a 1996 225 efi outboard. The boat has a jack plate on it and a 25p trophy prop. I have run the boat as it is for about 4 years now and have never been able get anything over 65 mph on GPS. I am only turning around 5000 rpm but I think my gauge could be wrong, will verify once I can finally get the boat on the water…… It is snowing today in Michigan!

What should I get out of that setup and what can I do to get in the low 70’s?

Welcome to the forum.

Do you know where the center of your prop is related to the pad? Are you 5" below the pad, 2" below the pad, or even with the pad?

My dad had an 84 Enchanter with a slightly modified 2.4 200 carb motor (shaved heads, bigger carbs, exhaust drilled out) with a 5.5" CMC jack plate. We ran centerline between 3" - 3.5" below the pad with a 25p Trophy and it ran between 74-75mph on GPS.

I believe I am around 3 inches below the pad the last time I checked after a 65 mph run. I have an electric jackplate on it so I tend to make adjustments on the fly to see if I can squeak a little more out of it.

I run the boat on a bigger lake so I luckily can run the boat at WOT for a mile or two to get it all dialed in. The boat will start to chine pretty bad if I have the prop too deep.

Thanks again for your responses its very appreciated.

5000 RPM at WOT seems a little low. The recommended rpm range for those engines are 5000-5800 rpm. Start by verifying that your tachometer is indeed accurate. Just a little less pitch, or a 3 blade of the same pitch will increase RPM and put the engine towards the higher end of the range, increasing your overall speed. If you suspect you may be down on power, perform a compression test and we'll start from there. Best of luck!

5000 RPM

Correction my gauge was wrong I am reving out to 5700ish. The real heartbreaker I found is using a GPS in your boat. My boat speedometer reads 70.

I will run a compression check on the engine just to be safe. What should my compression be around?

Thanks again for all your responses!!!
