    This is the part of your first post that jumps out to me. This boat is going to be a ton of work to get right, but you know that. If you do it, it will probably be a sweet boat in 2 years when the restore is done.

    If you ran the engine 1 inch deeper and it was already pretty deep then yes that will hurt you. The less setback will slow it down more also but I agree with doing that with your 3 liter. You need to measure the prop shaft with the bottom of the V and see how much lower the center of the prop...

    +1 that's a 15k boat and good amount of blood sweat and tears to get those motors into what I would consider good condition. You would have to have a lot of faith in the seller that it has a "small" issue. Forget about testing it out before you buy.

    Oil Consumption

    Extreme cold weather can make engines do weird things sometimes. Give a few minutes to warm up and let the rings seal. BTW how long are you going between oil changes on that dino oil?
