prop for Pulse 170BR

pulse92

New member
I have a '92 Pulse that I want to be a better ski and tow boat. I have a 150 XR6 on the back now, and have been considering a Laser pro. I was also looking at getting a Tempest Plus 23, or a High Five prop this summer to help cavitation and hole shot.

Any ideas?

I have got a TurningPoint SpeedZone 23". It is almost a copy of a Tempest+, but on most boats about 1mph faster. Prop looks like new. $300+shipping. Includes hub kit for merc.

I also have a MichiganWheel Apollo 21" for $250 w/merc hub. I ran this prop for a while on my23'Enforcer w/225 and it was the fastest 3 blade that I tried. The boat was a bit heavy for the 23".

High 5........HANDS DOWN... NOTHING ELSE... i'd say 19 or 21 pitch... can't beat the pull and the holding power threw turns of a high 5.

I've owned two Pulse 170/171 boats, one was the closed bow 171 with the XR6, and one was the open bow with the 135 black max. The advice I'm typing below from my experience is with the 'true' XR6 lower unit, the small diameter 1.78:1 gear ratio. If your XR6 is a '92 with the original lower unit then:

Here's the deal. You need the smaller diameter of the Laser II type prop for best all around speed and hole-shot on your boat setup. The larger diameter Tempest style props will not work as good. I'm a huge fan of the Tempest prop, but not for a 17' boat.

You want a 26" Laser II if you want best top speed and you are at a low enough altitude to make all 150 horses. If you're high altitude, you won't be able to spin the 26". In that case, you'll need to pitch down.

You want a 22"-24" Laser II if you want good overall hole-shot and top end.

You want a High 5 prop if all you want is hole-shot and pulling power. It's a very smooth prop but has very little bow-lift. I'm guessing in the 23" size. I might have one in my garage you could borrow, where do you live? Not sure if I still have it...............

JW, I live in SE Michigan between Hillsdale and Adrian. I think I am going to pursue the Laser II, but once Mike at Checkmate is done with my new interior and I am ready to put the boat in the water I may take you up on checking out that High Five.

Thanks again for the advice.

I tried a lot of props on my 185 Pulse and found the Trophy Plus to be the best prop for the boat. Was just as fast as the LaserII and way better to ski with and a added benifit of better handling.
I'm running a 10" J/P though on mine so I'm sure that is helping the 4bld in top end.

My props are standard hub, not small hub. What is your gearcase diameter?

I love my High 5. It has an outstanding holeshot and good bite everywhere. You can have some cup added that helps with the bow lift. And, with 5 blades, it's smooth as a sewing machine. I was able to get 75 mph out of mine after is was worked a little, but I'm hard against the limiter. I just wish they made one in a 26 or 27.
