My name is Paul. Most folks call me Montana, well, for the simple reason I am from Montana hailin down from Wyoming way! I am new to the boating pleasure. I am a new boater and am starting to get a mite older now and figured I would take up a new hobby instead of trying to find the softest rock to land on by being bucked by some stupid horse who don't see things quite the way I do!
Anyway, a friend of mine gave me this boat. It is an old 1976 Steury boat. The model is T515C with an 85hp Evinrude. This boat hasn't seen water since 1979 and hasn't been started since then neither. It is definately a project boat and has been out in the weather all this time with no cover. But surprizingly, despite the weather beating, It doesn't look all that bad! I have pictures of it, but don't know to post them. Its pretty much plain jane. It ain't got no speedometer, tach, or anything. Just a steering wheel and a shift throttle lever. I don't know what they call it. It has a toggle switch below the ignition switch that says something about full choke. I don't know where the trim switch would be or if it even has one. I can't find pictures of this boats interior layout anywhere. Nor can I find a manual of anykind. The engine looks really clean under the cover, it isn't locked up, and the plugs look almost new. I can't get it to do anything though. I put a brand new battery in it, turned the key, and all I got was one click from the solenoid and thats it. The bendix doesn't even try to rise or anything. The starter isn't froze up. Its like no power goes past the solenoid. None of the switches work or activate anything that I can see or hear The solenoid looks like an old ford type. I am figuring it to be bad after setting up all this time. Maybe I ought to replace it! Will a bad solenoid stop every other electrical component from working? Does anyone know where I can get a wiring diagram for this old thing? I really want to get this thing running! Will somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanx!
Montana!

welcome paul, with this being a checkmate forum this may not be the best site to find infomation on steury boats but here a few better places to look

good luck and we love pictures of all boats. I believe there is a thread on here somewhere on how to post pctures. here it is http://checkmate-boats.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5425

Thanks for the info. But do you know where the tilt or trim lever is on this old boat? It is a Steury model T515C evinrude 85hp. Or do you know where it was supposed to be> Because there is nothing that indicates a trim lever that I can find. Thanks! Montana

there may not be a level gauge, some boat manufacturers doesn't think there were needed but you can add one. the motor may not even have tilt and trim. look at the mount for the motor, if there is hydraulic or electric cylinder then you most likely have power tilt. most motors in those day only came with power tilt but not power trim. the difference is power tilt moves quickly and power trim is a slower moving for fine adjustment. there should be a switch on the control box or dash to control it.

Tilt cylinders

There are 2 hydraulic cylinders under the motor. boat there is no switch that is labled for the tilt. There are 3 switches that I can find. One is below the key that is a spring type toggle. either up or down and it says: For full choke. And it does activate the choke solenoid on the motor. One switch is in front of the control lever housing and it says: Adjust for throttle friction. And the 3rd swilch is on the dash that turns on the lights. And thats it. Could it be automatic somehow? Does the motor have to be started for the tilt to work? Could it be that the tilt works with the directional throttle lever when moved in forward or reverse? It seems like that something is missing from the top of the housing. The housing itself splits in half to take it apart. But there are 3 screw holes on top of the housing that indicates that something was there. I dont know if it was just for some kind of an emblem that was screwed on there, or some other type of component. But there are no loose wires anywhere. I wish I knew more about boats! There is only one Marine shop here in Cheyenne. And they won't tell me nothing or answer anything. They want me to bring the boat in so they can charge me money that I don't have. I am sure that this is all simple. I just don't know! Please help!
I finally got the motor to turn over strong now. It was a broken ground that went from the starter solenoid to the wire strip on the back of the motor on top. Does anyone know where the fuel pump is on this motor? How does this thing charge your battery? I have so many questions guys! Please try and help!

I have never heard of an automatic one. the switch most of the time is a toggle swith in the control handle. check the switch that sayes throttle friction. it sould be a turn dial not normaly a switch. the key must be turned on for the tilt to work but not running.

Most of those Old JohnnyRudes of that size still had two cylinders that helped to manually tilt the motor. Have a look around the motor for a lever that says tilt. If you motor is a manual tilt, it will be there. To tilt the motor, you have to flip the lever which essentially locks the motor from tilting if it's not in the tilt position.

The toggle for the choke is essentially just a manual switch which turns the choke on and off. So when you start the motor cold, you hold the choke in the on position while you crank it over. Then when the motor fires, you usually let go of the choke toggle but if the motor starts to die you can nudge it back on and off until the motor runs without needing to be choked.

The other knob which is for friction is usually just a knob that you can turn, and what it essentially does is increases the force needed to move the throttle lever back and forth. So if you find when you let go of the throttle that the lever backs off then you increase the friction so that the lever will essentially stay in position at speed.

If you want to post a few pictures of your motor in the area where it clamps on to your transom, we might be able to tell you if you actually have power tilt/trim or if it's manual where the tilt lever is.

Also, as nathan mentioned, if you could post some info on our sister site Endless Boating that would be great. We do a have a few other fellow Steury owners there.

Hey all! I tried everything I could to post pics of my boat in a 100 different ways. I keep getting the infamous x-box. So I said screw it! I will add them as a link. But I dont know if that will work either.
Anyway, I am beginng to believe that there are some parts missing on this tilt function. In the pics I have I pointed to a lever on the left side of the engine looking at from the back. I see no way to operate the tilt. I am an excellent mechanic in a way, but I am stumped on this boat! I pointed to what I believe are the Spray ports that water shoots out of. I took pictures of the control panel showing what switches there are. It looks to me that something is missing from top of the control panel because there are three screw holes that indicates that something was there. May there was an emblem of some type there. I dont know! But my main concern is the tilt function! I don't know how to raise or lower the engine! I pulled a pin out that looked like it was a pin to lock the engine in the raised position. Nothing worked. That lever that I pointed at moves up and down but does nothing. I don't know if the engine has to be started or not. I don't see a hydraulic pump, reservoir, or anything. I don't even know where they would be located I can't afford a manual for this particular boat which is a Steury model T-515-C. I also just tried to paste the links of the pics. I don't know if they will work or not. So here is the info to my Imageshack so you all can see for yourselves as to what I am up against. My User ID is: PaintedStallions and the password is: werty123 Please feel free to go there! Its the only way I know for you all to see the pics! But here is one link. Try it if it is clickable! Thanks! Well, it looks like some of them would post, some of the Wouldn't. So please try the links or go see for your self. Thanx again

If I'm remembering right you flip that lever then lift up on the motor and that will release the latch and allow it to go down. The pin you pulled us probably the pin that supports the motor in the down position.

Okay! I got a part of it down pat!

I got the motor to lower by hand. Do I have to physically and manually raise and lower this motor everytime I use it? It seems like it would be a pain in the arse. I see no other way to do it. I looked all over the shaft housing, "I don't know the tech terms to boats", and can't find where a plug would be to check the gear oil level. With that said, are there any other lube areas other than grease fittings that I should check? If so, what are they and where are they located? I want so bad to start this thing. But I want to do it right! I have water cuffs for the intake ports, but no water hose or spigot. But what I really want to know is what that lever is and what it does that I pointed to in the pic I posted. Its the one under the engine housing! What purpose does it serve? Again, this a 1976 Evinrude 85hp model no. 85693D. Thanx all!

was just about to ask about the the model number. There should be tilt and trim unless it has been removed or never had it. the lever is to lock the motor in the up position while traveling. here is a link to a website that you can order parts and has diagrams of the motor http://www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1976&hp=85&model=85693D .

the three holes in the control box is were there was a black pad on the top was. I had the same control on a 55 hp I had. the top holes on the motor id were the water comes out. you can put water flusher (ear muffs) on the lower unit or a trash can that comes above the holes in the lower unit. with the water running you will be safe to start it.

as for a manual you can get them on cd cheap on ebay.

I would buy this on http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Evin...Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item2557c7a227

I would also buy this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/73-9...Motors_Manuals_Literature&hash=item4cf5327b17

good luck

The Plug! The Plug!

Yeah man! I see the filler and drain plug on the exploded view of the link you sent me. I went out to my boat and there is absolutely no plug like the one indicated in the diagram on my boat. Wierd? I guess I am going to have to break down and drag this thing down to the boat guy here in cheyenne. I am just too new to boat engines and boats period.
How about the steering? does the boat hve to be running in order for it to steer? I don't see any reservoir for steering or hydraulic fluid anywhere. It just looks like one line goes from the steering wheel to the steering push rod in the back of the boat which connects to an arm on the engine. I will post some pics of the plug areas and steering areas in a few! Thanx!

Pics of Steering lines

Well I found the drain and fill plugs! Not good! Seems like someone left the plugs out or lost them. Everything turns free. But there may be crud in there. I guess I will flush it out and see what happens.
These are pics of the Steering mechanisms. The 2 lines on the steering wheel assembly under the steering wheel seems wierd. One is blocked off, "The dark one",. It looks factory, or whoever, did a damn good job of melting it off. So only one line goes to the steering arm that you see from the outside view. The white line that you see is a pic from under the tail end which is connected to the outer steering arm and thats it! Any clues? Thanks!

most all the older outboard was not hydraulic steering. the steering works like the throttle cables. there is a gear under the dash that that pulls or pushes the line to turn the motor. very simple design. I have zoomed in and attached the spot on the lower unit to look for. there sould be a plug on the back upper part in the channel. above the intake fins. dont give up yet. also try googlr and see if you can find a set by set guide online. just search for you motor not the boat. the fill plug shoul be the upper plug and the drain should be almost on the bottom of the housing.

sorry was typing other post as you were replying. the steering looks normal. the white line is the connection and the black is just so the line has a space to be lengthen and shortened without just coming out of the assembly.

Oil level

There are 2 lines that come off the steering mechanism under the dash. One goes all the way to the back of the boat and connects to the steering arm which is connected to the boat. There is no steering pump or reservoir in between. And the other line is about 18 inches and just ends! I figure it is there to relieve back pressure in some way. How do I get the steering wheel to turn? Its like it is locked in place or something. There is nothing on the motor that locks that I can see. No locking pin or nothing. The white line wouldn't be white if there was fluid in it. How do you fill the steering lines up and where?

the steering is mechanical. there is not any fluid in the lines. it is a cable system just like the throttel and shift cabels. if it will not turn then the cable inside the white line (which is just a housing) is probably rusted in place. you can try and get the cable out of the housing and lube it or replace the whole cable.
