Newbie here.. hope I put this in the right section. I recently purchased a 1992 Pulse 171 with Mercury 115 with laser II 22p prop. Took it out it went about 38 mph full tank of fuel and 3 people in it. wondering what more I can get out of it? "Cheap Money" keep in mind. Also I noticed the boat pulled hard to the right any ideas? And last the tach does not work any starting ideas on debugging it. I have a repair manual im gonig to start looking through.

Thanks

That's quite a load for a 115 with 22p prop, a 19p would probably be better, once you get a working tach and see what rpm your turning you'll know forsure, I'm sure your not anywhere near max rpm at WOT with that tall of prop. you would notice a big difference if you go out by yourself and you should prop it to suit your needs, depending if it will be used mostly with a light or heavy load.

I assume it has single cable steering if it pulls hard to the right, you can try adjusting the trim tab or add a torque tab to the skeg, or upgrade to a dual cable or hydraulic system.

Its got dual cable... Just want it to go fast with 2 people on it if its a little slower with more than ill live with it... I was thinking of doing a jack plate good choice or no?

John's right, you need an accurate tach before you start messing with props.

The common things that go wrong with an outboard tach:
a) no power to the tach
b) bad ground wire on the tach
c) broken signal wire to the tach
d) bad rectifier in the engine
e) bad tach

If it's the rectifier your battery will slowly run down because of little or no charging. They're easy to check with most multi-meters.

You need to look up what the max rpm range of your engine is, then when your boat has the correct prop you'll be right at the top end of that range when lightly loaded at wide-open-throttle.

Debugged the problem with the tach was bad voltage regulator/rectifier its on order... had it out today with 1/2 tank and just 2 people hit 54MPH on my speedo racing another boat that hit 57 and my little check was pulling on it the whole time so could have been faster!!! im pumped now i know teh prop size is good for it
