21 or 23 pitch HI-V on 2000 Plusare BR with 225 Promax?

Hello,

I am seeking advise for what pitch of High Five prop to place on a 2006 Pulsare Bow River with a Mercury Promax 225 connected to a 5.5" powerlift jackplate. The boat will being used primarily for tubing and sking and as you know the maximum RPM on the motors is 6500. I want to keep the revs up and create as much torque as I can but don't want to be banging into thre rev limiter regularly either. I believe that it will come down to the 21p and the 23p. I don't have any current data that would be relevant because I am re-powering from a much smaller etec. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Assuming the 225 PM is healthy and has a 1.87 lower unit, I think it would have no problem with a 23p Hi-V on a 2000 BR to pull skiers etc. I had a 150 XR-6 carb fishing motor (75 hp less than the 225 PM) on my 2000 BRX for one weekend and with a 25p Hi-V it would come out of the water no problem with 4 adults in the back of the boat. The blades on the Hi-V are pretty small so they're easier for the motor to turn.

You might have seen my other posts on this topic as I have been through this with my 2100br and a 250xs. I went with a 23P trophy plus(small hub - 4 blade) and the vent holes closed or with a small opening. It's works pretty well for tubing and wake boarding. I know I will not drop the pitch any lower, so I'd pick the 23 high five.

After reading ForbesZ's post, I'm wondering if I shouldn't be considering a 25p HI-V. I would have never thought 150 would have done so well with a 23p HI-V

Yes, the Promax is a low hour great running motor with excellent compression and a Sportmaster 1.87 lower. If I didn't enjoy skiing so much myself , I wouldn't be worried about the RPM's on a lower pitch prop. Since the wife or the occasional friend or family member may be towing me, I want enough in pitch to avoid holding a clinic on tach and throttle management. The more I contemplate it, it's looking like maybe I should go with the 25P. If anyone else has any experience with a Pulsare, similar power and a 25p Hi-V please feel free to chime in.

I used a 23" Tempest prop on my 2.5 liter 225 Promax and it had tremendous hole-shot and kept the rpms at 6400-6500 when I was at max speed/trim. Great all around prop. All my previous checkmates needed a swap between my HI Five and speed props depending on what I was doing.

Not that setup though, the 2100/Promax/Tempest was the perfect combo at my altitude (900')

Have you run a Hi-V before? When I had the 25p Hi-V on my 2.5-liter 150 carb (which had a 1.87 4-hole CLE) it had great hole shot but I found that it would suck in a bunch of air when turning tight corners and it would hold the air pocket around the blades longer than other props. When my wife is pulling me skiing I don't think she'd make the connection between a sudden increase in RPMs with cavitation and know to feather the throttle when it happens. If you think your wife and friends also might not know what to do when cavitation happens, it could be more likely that cavitation would cause your motor to bump the rev limiter more so than choosing a 23p prop instead of a 25p.

In the end, I don't think you'll want to go down to the 21p, but based on my experience with the 25p I think it might be a little too much for skiing if your weights are around the same as mine. I am 6' 2", 210 lbs, and skiing on a Connelly F1 ski (which is definitely not the most buoyant ski out there). I also frequently have 250 - 500 lbs worth of people in the boat when skiing too. With those factors, my recommendation would be consistent with JW's response - try the 23p and tell the wife/friends to watch the tach on launch and keep it under 6 (which it will proabably tend to do anyway). I would also suggest that you not overlook trying a 3 blade like the Tempest especially considering the experience JW had with his.

Hope that helps.

I recently purchased an 09 Pulsare 2100 with a 225 Merc with a 23 Tempest prop. When trying to pull skiers it didn't seem to have the hole shot power that I was expecting. Might I need to adjust the jackplate to accommodate a better holeshot? THANKS so much! Jeff

Is the prop cavitating a lot on takeoff or is it grabbing the water really well? If it's cavitating on takeoff then lowering your jack plate will likely help, but if it's grabbing the water the adjusting your jack plate isn't going to make much of a difference. Is the motor a 3-liter or 2.5-liter? What gear ratio is your lower unit?
