270 Convincor MCOB

As you can guess by the screen name I own a Baja, I have decided to sell my 252 Islander with a 502 Mag/Whipple set up. I love the boat and it runs strong but I have decided I want to go back to stock power. My boating needs require an open bow/mid cabin set up, I did not know checkmate made such a boat. Can anyone give my an honest opinion of this boat? What is the degree vee on the hull? ride quality? I boat on Kentucky Lake in Western KY which is very large and can see 3' chop. the one i have found is a 2001 with a 500 blue motor speed is important to me what could i expect from this engine at WOT? What other if any issues should be considered when looking at this boat.

thanks

That 270 will handle the water conditions at Ky Lake better than you expect. I think they ride better than almost any other boat of similar size that I have been in. It will even handle the occaional 3' chop you see. I boat frequently on a local lake that sees 4'ers when the wind is up good and my boat has handled it with aplomb.

The open bow 270 is a little heavier, I think, than the 270 with the full cabin, but with the big blue 500 you should have a legit 70-73 mph boat on GPS depending on conditions.

One of my best friends has a 272 Boss with a procharged 502, actually he just sold it. It is damn fast when the water is really good. On a recent weekend trip he spent an entire day on my boat where he actually drove it quite a bit. One of the many compliments he gave me was on how well the boat ran and rode. He said that my 253 (very similar to the 270) rode WAY BETTER in rough water than his boat, and this is not a guy to go around handing out compliments.

The mid cabin looks like a neat boat, never herd much feed back on them. Boat should run a ball park mark of 70 if the engine is strong and not tired. You should be able to get a good deal on it being a odd ball boat with a mid cabin. The mid cabin only appeals to very few in a deep v set up. I do belive the bottom mold is the same as the Convincor, just the top deck is different.

the previous owner of that boat, i think, is a member here. if your talking the one in dubuque. i cannot remember his name/screen name though.

They handle very well. My good friend has a 259 (same hull as 270....before the measuring standards changed) and I own a 253. They ride better and are faster than any baja I have driven (a few actually to admit it). Can't go wrong with a Checkmate. You should see 70-73 GPS like fireguy said.

Yes its the one in Dubuque, the owner that brought it to IL from Idaho posted over on OSO as did a few others, he said he paid $31k in 2009 which would mean he stole it then or as most think its now overpriced. What are the opinions over here......overpriced? Anyone ever have low speed handling issues "hooking" while turning or chine walk at higher speeds?

No low speed issues that are real dangerous........they tend to porpoise a bit under 40 mph depending on setup....keping drive tucked all the way in prevents this though. The only other minimal thing I have seen is when you let off of the throttle to slow down quickly, the boat will hook slightly to the right until you compensate back for it....motly because the sudden lack of engine tourque and the drive was slightly cocked to compensate for the torque under power. Both of those issues are going to happen with most high performance hulls. They are very stable with the speeds you are looking at. They will get up on the pad but chine walk is very minimal.

You will be very satisfied with the way they handle at speed. IMHO no dissapointments.
