300 e-tec to 300xs

No, no difference, none - like comparing Ford to Chevy to Mopar.
Sorry could not resist. I'm getting beat up on another thread that's a little similar. LOL

I would only ask how much is it going to cost you to switch. I don't think it would be worth it. Can you make money doing the switch?

From all the comparisons I've read in the past..nothing has outperformed the Mercury 300xs in top speed or accelleration boat for boat. At one time some people thought the Yamaha 300 would be faster and that was also proven to be incorrect. The crazy thing that irks me...is that the metric motorcycle companies (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki) have the technology to build a potent, lightweight, green two stroke outboard motors. Why have they not jumped into the game?? They build such fast motorcycles with great powerplants but only produce "tame" boat motors. One of my best friends owns a rigging shop that is a Merc, Yamaha, and Suzuki dealer. They are constantly re-rigging boats with most of the sales going to Suzuki because they are priced much less than Yamaha and Mercury...and are reliable powerplants....I, along with so many others, wish Mercury would get back into the game with a strong running two-stroke priced for the average guy to afford!

I think the 300 XS would have a big performance advantage over the Etec. The Etec is probably closer to 275-280 HP and the XS is closer to 325-330 HP.

That said, I love my 200HO Etec.

I would guess the XS would be about 5 mph faster than the Etec..........Skip

Jup, it amazes me when I go out to the coast and stop at local marinas......95% of the OB boats you see are Yammies, Suzukis, and Hondas.........very few Mercs.

Shannon, we still see ALOT of 300/350 Verado powered center consoles in Florida...many of the Miami Boat Show CC had Verado power. Dollar wise, Suzuki is the most aggressive on price!!

It's because Merc is for getting to the fishing spot first. Yamaha and Honda are for getting there and back. :-)

i hope there is a little difference. my dad wants my 300 e-tec for his pontoon so i will more than likely try a merc. e-tec has been great so far, the merc better not let me down.

I have talked to 2 different Merc reps in my travels and both have said the current 300xs will remained unchanged and no further capital will be allocated to the optimax platform other than updated cowling. Outboards will be required to be catalyst in 4 years or so. Merc is diverting all of its resources to the 4-stroke platform for weight reduction and HP increases.
Yammi, Honda & Suzuki are all aligned to make the cut. Not sure what BRP's plans are since they do not have a 4-stroke offering.

2 strokes will be extinct in a few years. All motorsports are going the way of 4 strokes. Dirt bikes, waverunners, etc. I think outboards will be following.

Its sad but true... I will miss the days of 2-strokes!! I will be rebuilding them till i die! i will not conform to the 4-stroke on my dirt bike or my boat!!

That being said i wish i had the spare change for some opti power!!!

BRP seems very committed to refining the 2 strokes. I'd be surprised if they gave up on them any time soon.

We were all saying the same thing about 2-Strokes when the emissions laws got really tight. Then the DI 2-Stroke was invented!

Time will tell. I for one don't want to see the egg-beaters die!

I bought a 250 Etec from a guy who went to a new 250 ProXS. He gained 5 mph and was happy with the upgrade. In the end it cost him almost 10k but felt it was worth it. I was happy to have the Etec at a bargain basement price. It ran flawlessly for the 3 years I owned and I didn't care that he could outrun me.

We spend time on Florida's west coast in the winter and the rare Mercs you see are Verados. No new 2 stroke Mercs at all. Yamaha 4 stroke has probably 75% of the market. At least part of the reason is that nobody is looking for maximum top end. It is almost always too choppy to run WOT. The biggest prioriity is all about getting back to shore as someone said earlier.

Yami's, Suzukis, and Hondas. Same here. I cant even tell when the Suzukis are idling. I see them pointing at me when I cruise by with a 1 sq foot piece of my boat touching the water and the canyon walls echoing with the roar of my drilled mid, no can, short tuner, high compression Merc . With their emasculated lips they are saying bad things but they know where they'd rather be.

I am going to hoard all the two strokes that I can!! I don't know a lot about the difference between two and four strokes but I know my two stroke!!!! so that's what I am going to stay with and it will always be MERC or nothing!!!!!!!!!

Don't expect to see 90 around these parts, sea level seems to make a big difference, my buddy with a 12' 2100/300 XS is getting just over 80.

hey now cut me some slack John, that was my first summer with it, as soon as the lake is liquid again I'm going to beat that, guy who owned it before me claimed 88, we'll see how much the DBR remap and Nass cowl help out as well,

oh and I'll try to get one of the 300 etec powered pulsares to race
