460 head gasket gone

Hey guys I just bought a 22 ft vision it has a 460 and the head gasket is gone. Just wondering what it would cost roughly to get fixed at dealer? Or how hard it is to do on my own and what the parts are worth?

I bought it without caring because I got it for 7900 with a custom hawk trailer and the boat is mint, other than the motor! It is the same boat that is in the 1989 brouchere in the gallery page red and white with through hull exhaust, Even though it has a motor issue I still think it went cheap!

If ANYONE KNOWS THIS BOAT COULD YOU HELP ME OUT WITH SOME INFO ON IT?

iT IS MY FIRST BOAT AND i AM ONLY 26 i CAN'T WAIT TO GET IT OUT!

tHE BOAT IS ALL ORIGINAL WITH A AMAZING GELCOAT STILL SHINES!

:welcome:
Where are you located? I know of a good mechanic here locally (great guy and reasonable).
Have you ever done a headgasket before?
Its not hard to do, but if your engine compartment is tight it won't be any fun.

I live in ontario east of toronto. But I have never done a head gasket but have torque wrenches and all the proper tools to get it done. I just need to know how to do it!lol

How much do the gaskets cost and where would I get them? Local marina I guess?

I've always said if you own them kinda tools you know how to us them, if not, its time to learn. There is nothing difficult about changing a head gasket. Its about being neat, organized and pay attention to detail. First you need to diagnose for a fact that you have only a blown head gasket and not another problem. There are past posts on this site that go into great detail on how to do this. I've seen people assume a head gasket was blown, turned out to be an intake manifold leak, exhaust, yada yada.

I suggest obtaining a service manual on your engine, (you'll need one sooner or later) read thru it and see if its a project you feel you can undertake. One thing for sure, if you do it yourself, by the time your done you'll know your boat inside and out and be able to handle yourself quite well should you break down out on the water. (again, sooner or later it'll happen) As a mechanics rule of thumb, the projects are never as easy as they seem, the good thing is NASA isn't involved, so solutions generally take additional labor and a machinist and take pictures before during and after. For you to use as a reference and folks on here that will be able to assist you.

Why do you think you have a head gasket leaking. Could be other problems intake gasket ,exaust manifold, or a cracked block from freezing.
I agree with Happy it's not hard to fix if you have mechanical abillity at all. As it comes apart inspect everything real close you may find the problem before you get that far if not it had to come apart anyway...
BUY A MANUAL FOR THAT MOTOR this will be a must have..
It' really not that hard to do sounds as if you have all tools that will be needed and that is the biggest part of any job.. take a lot of pics. most of the time there will be someone on this board that can help when you need it.. GOOD LUCK.. POST PICS OF THE BOAT :bigthumb:

Congrats on your purchase and I hope you are having fun with your '89. I also have a used '89 Maxxum and a '74 MX I/O (bought new). The biggest lesson I've learned over the years is watch your water - temperature, pressure, and flow. I blew an impeller at WOT and siezed the 6 cyl 4 miles from shore, and never forgot it again.

As for mechanical work - remember, the engine in a boat is under far more load than in a car, and needs higher quality products. Head gaskets are no exception, and I use Cometics - they're expensive, but worth every penny.

Good luck with your new adventure and hope it brings you as much pleasure a mine have for the last 35 years...:surf:

Here's a link to the manual online:

If you do not know for sure whats going on with the engine, without pulling the head theres no way to be sure it's a head gasket, find someone who does whats going on...you will be $$$ ahead..Rob

If you do get to the point of pulling the heads be smart and have the heads surface planed and checked for cracks before re-assembly.
There are times that the head gasket blows due to a cracked head and if you repair this engine while it is in the boat you are bound to get banged up and cramped up alot. Wouldn't it be nice to just do it once, do it right, and enjoy it?
