85 Evinrude Question

Almost finished with my restoration of my '75 V-mate, mounted the motor last weekend after I had taken the lower unit in to a "boat mechanic" to replace the seals and water pump. I hooked up the "ears" to start it, and when I did water started spraying out of the seam between the exhaust housing and lower unit. What's up? Do I need to pull the lower unit back off or is it normal/ok for water to leak here? Any advice is welcomed!
