Can you buy a hull?

Dave Brinkley

New member
I'm struggling pretty bad trying to strip my hull for a repaint. It must have some industrial paint or something on it, I've never encountered automotive paint this tough. Can you buy a hull from Checkmate? No motor, no trailer, no interior just a new painted hull? Anybody got a decent ORIGINAL painted hull for sale?

Thanks

Dave the original color is not paint it is kinda like a colored polyester resin that is molded into the fiberglass (acually the fiberglass is layed into the color)and can not be stripped off. But if your boat has been painted and you cant strip it off it is probably polyurethane based paint (like IMRON)and it eats into the gelcoat pretty good when applied corectly. If thats the case a with whole lot of sanding it will come off. But if its not peeling why not just sand it real good and repaint it?

I agree with convincor, if the paint is not pealing, sand it smooth and lay paint on top of it. One of the hardest things is to get paint to stick to jell. Mine was painted and stuck on great. So I am sanding the surface smooth and filling in the low spots. Then I will paint right over the top of it with primer and paint.

To answer your question, you can buy a blank hull if you'd like. Checkmate can do Anything!

Dave, give Kip a ring, or fire an email off to him. My guess is that they can do it for you.

Dave...if your hull is solid and it is actually GELCOAT...what exactly is the problem with it???

Solid color gelcoat hulls can be wet sanded and buffed out. Clear gelcoat (like over metal flake) can be re-shot with clear after some careful prep work.

If your hull is rough or needs repairing, you can also paint it with a durable marine grade (epoxy) paint right over the gel coat (preped right of course)...Awlgrip and Imron are a few examples.

What are you trying to do??? Jim.
