Checkmate Pulsare 2100 w/ 1998 Mercury Promax 300

Looking for some real world knowledge about this setup.

I am new to checkmates and looking at this setup I have found a good deal on a long deck.

That being said I am looking for info on efficiency and economy. The engine has the injection removed and is running premix at 50:1. Tank is 100 litres or just over 20 gallons.

My question is what should I be seeing for fuel burn cruising around 40 mph. I will punch it here and there but will mostly cruise. How long will 100 litres last. I am up in Canada and the current price for 92 is $1.60/litre or $6 a gallon. With the price of oil and gas together a tank will cost me roughly $180. Can I expect this to last a couple of weekends or will it last a day if I do light cruising and not boating constant all weekend?

I am also looking at an Allison Grandsport with 225 promax which should get better economy as it is lighter.

Basically looking for someone with a similar setup to chime in.
 
I do not know the actual fuel burn at 40 mph but the 300PM I owned was very thirsty. I've always heard a rough guesstimate of 25 gph at WOT.

I do have heard that. Anywhere from 25-30 gph at WOT. I am told by the owner he is guessing at 40 mph because the engine is not working that hard it would be around 10 litres an hour or 2.5 gph roughly. But he said its hard to do 40 mph on a boat that wants to go 80.

The reason I ask is I don't want to get into a situation I regret for a good price initially but a fuel nightmare.

What would you recommend between the two boats? Allison grand sport or the pulsare. I guess they would run roughly the same amount of fuel.

I have seen many posts about these two but having a very hard time deciding.

Best bet would be to trade in that 2 stroke on a 250 or 300 4 stroke. My 300 verado gets around 12-15 gph at wot according to the smartcraft and you only have to change the oil once per season.

Problem is the boat is a rebuilt 1994 pulsare LD and it was redone in 2006 and painted in 2008. Floor, transom and everything replaced in 2006. Older boat at a good price so putting a verado on it might not be financially a good idea considering
 
The other option is to deal the very desirable 300 promax off and get an Optimax Direct Injection, we have both a 2000, 225 and a 2007 250 ProXs, and they are amazingly better on fuel than the older 2.4s and 2.5s. Also we have two Pulsares and they have 38 gallon fuel tanks.

The 300 PM has really low hours too. Its a 1998 and has in the neighbourhood of 130 hours.

You have really opened my eyes into some possibilities.
 
At Wide Open Throttle your fuel burn will be very close to 10% of the horsepower. A 200 will burn around 20 GPH and a 300 will burn about 30 GPH.

At Wot it doesn't matter that much if it is a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. They will burn close to the same amount of fuel at WOT.

A 4 stroke or a direct injected 2 stroke will get much better fuel economy that a carbed or an EFI motor at part throttle or when idling.

It takes X amount of fuel to make X amount of horsepower at WOT.

If you don't believe it just go to Mercury's website and look at outboard tests.
 
Once you have the bug to go fast......you never care about fuel economy...until you're on the end of a tow rope!!!:bigthumb: I've been there more than once!!!;)

Not necessarily.. ;) - and I own a Pulsare :). This is an individual choice.
The GrandSport is truly a wonderful boat. Power-for-power, it will be the fastest V-hull you can hang an engine on, and they handle and ride like a dream. If you're comparing an Allison to a 20-yr-old rehabbed Pulsare, I'm guessing there must be quite a price difference.

Actually not as big as I would have thought.

Checkmate is a 1994 LD with 1998 300 pm. Rebuilt 2006, and repainted 2008 with custom colours. ($15,500)

Allison is a 1999 with 1999 225 PM $15,000 (no trailer, so I would need to obtain a trailer, but that brings down the price)

Both those prices listed are asking price before negotiation.
