Clearance to Remove Motor 251

I wonder if anyone can give me a firsthand answer if I am able to remove a complete motor including all accessories on a 1990 251 with a 502? It looks very close. I don't want to call in a favor for someone to come over and pull the engine out and then find I have to strip the front of the motor. This is my first time pulling a boat motor and it's been almost 30 years since I have done anything like this. Thanks in advance.

Anyone? Just trying to avoid a second trip from the backhoe if I can.

You always remove the motor as one unit, un bolt motor mounts, wire harness, power steering hoses, outdrive and brackets etc and lif the engine as one unit. It will fit barely. Some people take off the exhaust just so they have more room to get in there but it is not necessary.

we put a 502 in a 251 years ago, and if i'm not mistaking, the exhaust manifolds had to come off.

Thanks for the feed back guys. My main concern is if I can leave all the acc on or not. The overall length of the engine complete looks to be within one inch or so of the size of the opening of the engine bay. I guess I will find out this week if it will come out complete or not.

I am guessing that they are saying to remove the manifolds and then turn the motor sideways in the engine bay to get it thru the hatch.

did mine more times than wanted to...had headers, with those off comes right out...you know drive comes off 1st ?? also keep track of the fiber washers/springs under the rear mount at transom..

Drive is off, wiring is disconnected, fuel lines disconnected and the only problem I see is the boat has an offshore mount and the engine will have to be raised 10 inches to be clear of the side brackets for the mount. I'm not sure if the power steering pump will clear the bulkhead doing that. Ezstriper do you remember if you were able to leave the power steering pump on or if it had to be removed? If it does I will have to remove the exhaust manifold to do that. Thanks for the tips.

in 1990, i worked at a marina, and we got the first 502 mag in ontario and installed in the 251, it took me a while, but i remember removing the exhaust manifolds, and turning the engine sideways. this boat also had silent choice on it, and we had to install the power steering cooler on the bulkhead because of the silent choice clearance issues.

that job was a total pain in the rear as i recall.
