Engine Kept dying. Fuel issue?

I was out yesterday, everything was working great for about an hour of cruising and pulling a tube. Then I felt the engine cut out for a second. Then about a min later, it just died. Would start for about 2 seconds then die again. I sat for a while looking over the fuel system and couldn't come up with anything. So I poured a little gas down the carb, and it ran about 20 seconds, then died. Started right back up and got about another 20 seconds. I started heading to the dock at this point getting about 20 seconds of running each time. It still had good power when running, and didn't matter if I went 20mph or 50, it would still only last about 20 seconds. What could possibly cause this? Fuel pump? Carb dirty, or float sticking? Its a 84 exciter. 350 merc.

When's the last time it was used? Could be that you're trying to burn Ethyjelly instead of gas.

sound like its sucking air. maybe a cracked hose or fuel bulb. intake gaskett. etc. or a stopped up filter. sounds like as soon as you run the gas out of the bowl on carb it dies, then you must spin it over to refill. so its must be starving for fuel. just my 2 pennies

Original motor? or has it been replaced? Could be vapor lock, electrical, cloged this n that.

My Glassmaster was doing the same thing last season. It has a similar set up to yours, small block chevy Mercruiser set up. Ended up being water in the fuel. Take the separator filter off, pour it into a clear glass jar or bottle (I used a Snapple bottle). You might be able to see the water right away, if not just let it sit over night and if there is water in the fuel it will separate by morning. I ended up putting a good (Mallory) filter on but what I really think cured it is when I pulled the carb off to give it a once over. I think there was some water "hiding" in some of the crevices and taking the carb off/dumping it out really fixed it.

Think I have the mystery solved. My dip stick was about a quart over full and the oil was very runny and smelled like gas. Pulled the fuel pump off and there gas on the spring side. Could not see any holes of tears in the rubber, but looks like it went bad and was pumping gas into my oil. The boat sat for 8. I picked it up for cheap and drained all the gas out, put new water/fuel filter on it. Did all the steps for starting an engine that has been sitting. Made it out to the lake two trips about an hour and a half of cruising both times before it died. So I ordered a new fuel pump, and will see if that was the problem.

I would've bet dollars to donuts an ethanol issue- which we're ALL going to be seeing more and more of this summer.
