Engine size advice.....

I've got a 77-78 Trimate 1 (haven't gotten the paperwork yet), which has no engine. It clearly states on the plate that the boat is rated for 120hp. I also have a Yamaha Pro-V 150 V-6. Is this too much motor for this boat?? I've seen other boats with similar dimensions and hulls running black max 200's and the like. Anyone??

while a more qualified pro will be along... I think it would be ok...

most states do not require you stay below the rating (check to be sure) but your insurance company will need to know or they may not cover in case of an accident or it sinks, also if an accident occurs that will be considered closely.

I would think the weight would be ok as older models were probably heavier per hp but do not know that for a fact.

some here will say if the boat will float go with it... also I learned here that pre early 80's were measured at the crank, your yamaha is probably newer and measured at the prop. the trimate 120hp rating may be like todays 105hp engines... thats what 45% over powered?

others can also reply to stability, i have no clue on that aspect.

i have a 76 trimate III. its only rated for 200 but i got a 235 on it right now. but there isn't really a difference in wieght between the two. how big is your trimate?

lwr1967, I over hp'ed my Exciter by 15 hp and was told by the insurance co that under no circumstances could I insure it.
I called the Texas parks and Wildlife dept and they told me as long as I was not operating the boat recklessly they had no problem with it being overhorsepowered, but if I was caught doing anything wrong they would hang me.

i recomend the LARGEST motor you can get your hands on!!!!

 There ya go, I knew someone would step up to bat and make that claim LOL - see my previous post. LOL:)

While I would LOVE to put a 200-250 on the back of mine and run close to 100 I dont have the kahunna's to do it. I have seen the video's where the boats chine walk or start jumping side to side. I dont have the diapers big enough for the mess that would make with me at the wheel...:rof:

When I drive like a nut (and if I wipe out), I want to be able to get up and walk away from it. (havent learned to walk on water yet... hehehehe)

Just the conversation I was looking for.I have a 2007 16' Pulsare. It's rated for a 125 and thats what i have on it.I've had 58 on G.P.S. with a 26 Laser II,but thats all she's got.I want to put a 175 Pro XS on it.I'm not really worried about the weight 348lbs. on the 125 431lbs. on the 175.My main concern is the transom & hull. Can it take the extra H.P's.I would hate to lose my new motor too the Water Gods.

checkmate makes one hell of a transom!

my enticer is rated for 125hp
I have a 140 evinrude on it
and never had any concern with the extra hp
somedays i wish i had more, but Im very happy with it

that boats gonna fly!

Drop on the 150 and let her fly. That boat will sing in high key w/that motor on it. Plus the fact that it really isn't that much heavier than a 120 hp engine. The last few posts have all given you very good info. Plus as you have read the Checkmate transom is rock solid. Just learn to drive it thru the "chine-walking" so you can hold it on it's pad and you will be king of the lake.
