Flywheel removal

Beetle

New member
How about a little info for a mo-ron on the removal of a flywheel. Got me one of those factory manuals. The problem is all i have is the wrong tools to remove this puppy with. What can be used to hold the flywheel while braking the nut loose. OK OK OTHER than the tool listed in the manual. 1987 115 hp Merc.

You dont need to hold the flywheel if you use an impact.

I pulled my flywheel a few weeks ago and after I removed the nut I used a three arm puller to put upward pressure on it and tapped the flywheel with a hammer and it popped off.

Flywheel won't take a beating...

I put a new powerhead on my 99 Merc 150efi last year and bought a removal tool plus lifting hook on Ebay for under $30. You don't want to damage the flywheel or crankshaft just taking it off. Be careful putting the flywheel back on, my 99 did not have a "loose" keyed crankshaft but one of the teeth on the crank spline was only 1/2 way down. When you try to put the flywheel back on the magnets want to pull it back on the spline wherever it is positioned. Take my word for it that the engine doesn't run when the flywheel is 1 tooth off.

See this link for a similar tool on Ebay or just do search for "mercury flywheel tool", it looks a little different from the one I bought but appears to function the same.

Good luck
