is 70mph GPS attainable???

let me first start out by telling u what i have..its a 1983 20ft enchanter with a 1993 carbed 200hp 2.5 merc...i have no jackplate and im running a 25p quicksilver prop...last year with just 2 people in it i was running in the mid to high 60s on the speedo..and if i remeber right it was running a little over 5900 rpm (ive yet to GPS it because i just got one at christmas) ..i dont want to tear into the motor or heads...also i been reading alot about jackplates and who is running what setback and it looks like 10" of setback is what most enchanters are running...any other tips to squeeze a few mph out of her?? im hopeing to really hit 70...the boat runs great but it does have a tendency to blow the prop out if i have her loaded up or im pulling somone...with this get worse or better with a jackplate??? also what mph should this boat be running as it is??

also here are a few pics to give u an idea of what i got...

also if u look at the picture of the prop there is a nick in one of the blades....could this be hurting me....

you are right on track with the jackplate. there are many guys onhere who have setup enchanters. I am sure they will jump in here soon.

with the numbers you posted you should be right around 65 mph right now. :bigthumb:

id say you should be 63-65.
mine ran 66-68 with 15" setback. with exhaust releif, heads, prop and 15" mine ran 73 pretty steady. no prop blow out problems either.
i went to a 260 with same setback and was at 83.

make some speed runs on a cold morning with nothing in the boat but you and a nice new GPS, then we will talk about what you should do. Personally I think 65 is plenty fast considering most of the time there are too many boats around to go any faster.

oh, i couldnt tell from your photos, but if you dont have it i would go with at least a dual cable steering too. will help with control and chine walk (enchanters arent too bad here)

just remember when you hit 70 youll be looking for 72..........and so on!

If maximum performance is your goal then I don't think that 10" of setback would be optimal. The 20' Enchanter will want more setback lin boatn70 mentioned. I'm running 10" on an 18' Exciter and it wants more setback as I still have to trim all the way up to obtain max rpms.

first of all thanks for the help... i will be getting her out of storage after i get of work and start getting it ready for spring...i will probably take it out next week and get some numbers then i will post back...i have one more question tho.. if i move my outboard up on the transom now will i get a little more out speed out of it?? because it looks like its mounted pretty low right now...also will this only make my blowout probs worse? one more thing...what should i do about bracing the transom up for the extra stress of the jackplate?? because i hear these transoms arent the strongest...

and as for 65 being fast enough...i agree it is ...for most people...lol just not for me!! :thumb:

been a while for me with the outboards but if you get the propshaft centerline about 1" below the pad i think thats where it'll run well.
someone else might chime in on this........memory is the first thing to go!!

once its set back you can raise it more. be sure to look into your water pickups to make sure you have plenty of water at that time, you shouldnt need to worry now.

on my enchanter, my brother made some aluminum knee braces. the braces tied to the motor mount bolts through the transom then down to the side of the stringers next to the gas tank. never had any flex on the transom to note, even with 15" setback.

this was my favorite boat of all, enjoy yours!

:thumb: thanks again...but does anyone have any pics of their boats after they braced it up..just so i can get a better idea of what exactly needs to be done

update!!

First of all thanks to everyone on this forumn and all there help with us noobs....ive learned so much just by searching and talking with u all..
as for the update..i had my boat out this past weekend... and was able to muster up 66 on my new gps...i was very impressed considering thats about right on par with my speedo...i was guessing 60 maybe...i was only running 62 during the day with 2 people a dog and a bunch of camping gear...i mean alot of gear.. lol a lawnmower, weadeater, tent, etc.. so later on that evening right after dark...i ran it a little just outside my lakelot and thats when i ran 66 and i think it still had a coulple more mph...i was running between 5800 5900 rpm...does this sound about right?? thanks again..
