i have a 85 checkmate exciter. fom what i know it has a 350 engine bored .40 over, eldelbrock carb and intake with a 23 pitch prop. not sure how wide it is. but anyway the boat will only top out at 53mph. not maybe im wrong but i thought it would be faster since my dads 96 sea ray 24' cuddy cab will do 47mph with a stock 350 and 19 pitch prop. let me know what u think. thanks guys

if everything was right on your package you should be running in the 65 to 70 mph range real easy Viper

I think 65-70 might be a bit optimistic. 60'ish would seem to be closer to reality to me. Some things needed to get a better idea. First off, how many RPM's are your turning? What ratio drive do you have? What 23" prop might even be useful. Do you have any soft spots in your floor???????

I am sorry guys but the 65-70 mph is where one of these should run if everything is right........how do i know this ? well i was selling checkmates since 1968 and was there largest dealer till i closed my business down in 1990 and retired. Viper

I am sorry Jallen355 I used the same testing equipment as they did at Mercury Racing and OMC Racing. The equipment was + or - 1/2 mph. The cost to be the Best and to go Faster than most Jallen355 was not a problem for me. I raced Checkmates before most of you we even able to drive a car and I can tell you this that I have more hour's behind a Checkmate than anybody else on this fourm. Checkmate was my whole life...not a hobby..I even got married in a MX 15 foot checkmate so I have nothing to Prove to you or anybody else. I was just trying to help this person with Information that he could take to the bank......The last Checkmate i built for myself in 1990 was a Checkmate Vision 22 ft with a 540 ci big block chevy with Twin Turbos running 23 lb's of boost and 1127hp at 6100 rpm. So i will just go back to watching what is posted and keep my information to myself. I hope everybody has a nice weekend and a Very Merry Christmas. Viper

Jeees. Relax Vip. You forget take your meds this morning? It was a question. Now I have stripes across my arse from your belt and tears in my eyes! You hurt my feelings.

No problem, friend. I'm sure the information you have stored away could and SHOULD be very helpfull around here. I hope you continue to share.

I still think 60ish though... :poke:

Merry Christmas!

70 sounds a bit high from what I have seen here on the board. 60'ish does sound correct. Hey Viper, Remember we are talking about a 23 year old 260HP 350 here. Not a new unit you sold back in the 80's.

I wonder how many ex "biggest" checkmate dealers we have on the board now. :sssh:

LOL ok Guys you Win........I Said if Everything was RIGHT........he has a problem with the boat and motor he has.....he didn't ask how fast will my Old 23 Year old Broken Down boat go.....and i am sure that out there some where, someone has a sweet running 23 year old boat that runs the way it was ment to run. In fact with all the newer prop's out and the newer parts, all thoes old speeds could be improved on. So thats all from me......you guys have fun with all your answers......like i said before i will just watch all the post and keep what i know to myself......Viper

Why are you all upset? You are acting like there should be no more answers after yours. I am sure you are smart guy and have alot of checkmate knowledge. BUT, you cant come in here and lay down an answer with an iron fist and not expect a protest.

I didnt meen anything personal by the checkmate dealer comment. Its just that over the last 5 years I have seen many claim to be the biggest.

I am not upset.......so chill out......I really don't care any more......I will just leave this to you younger and smarter guys.......like I said......I don't have anything to prove here......I was just trying to him this guy.......I am sorry for that......some just like to post, just to be posting, even if they really don't have the right answers..... so everybody i am sorry.....this will never happen again from me.......Hopefully we can drop it now and if not this is my last post anyways...so have fun...Have a Very Merry Christmas to all.........Viper

Checkmate would probably still know what this model ran with different engine, props, drives and setup packages. That's something Mate usually provides the dealers as part of their sell packages. Basically what it is, is it's a page or two that shows the different engine options, drive options and then how each boat performed with a variety of common props.

Maybe we can ask Coop to ask Mike if Mate still have the performance info and then you'll have a definitive answer of what it would do when it was new and in optimum conditions.
