Looking For Some Guidance...

I've got a '76 Black Max 175 that I'm trying to get going and I feel like I'm missing something.

The previous owner had told me it needed a fuel pump, so I purchased a rebuild kit and went through the pump. Also, the motor had sat for a year and a half so I tore down the carbs and cleaned them out. After these were re-done, I couldn't get the engine to fire. Prior, I had fired it once, but only ran for a few seconds since I wasn't getting any water out of the telltale. Last weekend I started troubleshooting and tracked part of the problem to a bad stator. Ordered the part, and replaced it. I also found some rotted wiring on the trigger. I cut back the wires and replaced them using solder and heat shrink. (I'm not a big fan of crimp connections)

So now, in order to get the engine to fire I have to be past 45 degrees forward on the throttle lever. In fact, the carb butterflies don't even move until the throttle is 45 degrees forward. They are full open once the throttle lever is full forward, though. With the throttle full forward I'm at about 2k rps....

Is it as simple as something being just out of adjustment? I'm a wrencher at heart, but I'm not too experienced with boat motors and I admittedly don't have a huge amount of experience with carbs.

Sorry for the rambling, I'm just trying to get it all into the post.

Thanks in advance for any help!!!

make sure your timing and throttle movements are synchronized. the mercury manual tells you exactly how to do it. I recommend buying the PDF manual, its only $5

Thanks! Where's a good place to download that? I'm wondering if it's any more specific than my SELOC manual that I paid $45 for? :irked:
