Always happen's at the wrong time. I went to pull my boat out for the upcoming winter and I was putting along and went to get on plane and enging stalled, would start after it cooled run then stall and start again after cooling. Made it home. 5 out of 6 cylinders had good compression and it was not till we took the head of that we saw a big nick or crack in the head! My quetion is do I spend money and get a new powerhead? MY boat also needs a floor or do I put a newer 4 stroke on it?(big money) or do I cut my losses and get a newer boat??I love the boat but I now I could not get alot for it selling it especially with a blow motor!! thanks

What year is the boat and when you say it needs a new floor does that mean rip all the wood up. It might need stringer work too, are you in for doing that.

Some of my thoughts from the past If you need a new engine, floor, seats, sometimes its better to just go buy something newer then to sink 10000.00 in a 5000.00 boat.

Lets just say your boat was worth 5000.00 before your engine blew. If you spend 2000.00 on your engine to fix its still worth 5000.00.

Sometimes its just better to cut are losses and go by something else.

To me it sounds like your water pump stopped working and you ran it till it cracked the head. But I am no O/B gooroo

I understand I was going to do the floor this year coming! seats are still good not sure about the stringers? But not worth it other than the memories in that boat! Anyone want to buy a progect boat??

I tried selling 1 of those myself this yr with no takers. So I'm freshing up my 2.5 carbed 245 hp.for apx. $1300-1500 this winter.Just to create intrest and to hopfully sell it in the spring for whats its true worth is.And if that happens I'll send the busted hull and nice trailer down the river CHEAP!

And then if it doesn't sell,O'Well another quick transom fix and away I'll go out for season 15. Hey its paid for!!!!!

I think you'll be better off putting a down payment together then to dump a ton money into her!

P.S. BIG RED I here you, my wife wants to have her 00 convertable Camero painted with new rims,Note this is a 1 female owner, garage kept car.She DOES NOT understand that after putting $4000 into it she 'll still have a $5000 car or if not lower the value more than it is now.

inspect the piston/cylinder where you saw the cracked head. if it looks good and no scuffs or cracks, i would hustle up a used head and new gasket. you may have 50 bucks into both. this way you can put it back together and re-test the psi. if its good, you only spent 50 bucks.

Yup, pull the head and have a look. If it is just a cracked head it won't be too bad. If you are looking at a new powerhead I would part it out and repower. However, it is not good economics to put a new motor on an old boat.
The other approach is to sell it as is (let me know if that is your plan, I might be interested) and pick up a good used Checkmate and motor in the US. They sell way cheaper than here. Try craigslist Minneapolis. It will probably be cheaper than repowering even to a used motor.

thanks guy's I just had to vent alittle! On the plus side it happened at the end of the year and I have winter to find the best route? Mark If I get rid of it I will let you know! thanks for the reponse guy's! Shawn

Sounds like just a cracked head which is a very inexpensive fix...but what cracked the head?? If there is no damage to the block, pistons, rings, etc; I would just replace the head. Also check the water pump, make sure you're pumping water. As far as the boat is concerned, you have a great winter project. It's cool outside so you're not sweating your AZZ off! Start stripping the inside, cut out the floor, check the stringers and get to work!!;) You'll be ready by the time spring rolls around!:bigthumb:
