If you had to choose a 01 merc 225x or a 1999 merc 225 sport which motor would you want to put on your boat. Both have about 40 hrs on them. And there is about a 800 dollar differents in price

Hands down the 225x,arguably one on the best motors merc made.I had one w
ith a siman ecu a lightend flywheel.Id spin it to 7500 everytime out and fir very extended times.

I don't know what your budget is or how much these 2 motors are, but if they are anywhere close to what BK is asking for his Optimax, I would be saving my lunch money for the Optimax. It will run great and get at least double the gas mileage of the other 2 motors!
By the way, what are you going to put it on?
