Need to replace my Merc 496

Guys,

I have an '01 ZT240 with a Merc 496 in it with about 800 hrs.... One issue after another is popping up so I think I want to replace my engine. Do I need to replace with another 496 or are there other options that won't require me to rebuild the entire engine compartment? Appreciate any guidance you can give!
 
Are you a smartcraft or digital throttle motor? Any BBC merc motor would pretty much drop right in and plug into same harness plug unless you are digital.

What issues are you having? Most black motors can go 1000+ hours easily.
 
Smartcraft - lots of little things, including the water intakes rusting through (saltwater boat). I could spend the money to fix that but I figure why not spend a bit more and start fresh.
