Hello to everyone, just signed up,love checkmates,first boat purchase but not new to boating,need all the helpi can get,can anyone give me any and all things to look for and inspect!I found 1981 17 diplomat br with 79 merc 135,just seen pics of boat on craigslist,seems well worth the asking price of 1500.00,would like to be as educated as possible before i inspect!thank you Jim

I recommend you read some of the restoration discussions in the Overhaulin forum on this site. For starters check out: CMPULSE 170's - enforcer floor resto, GROUNDLOOP"s - eluder resto and OLD HICKORY's - resto. They posted lots of pictures and you see where they started from and what they found as the dug into the project. That way you will know what to look for.
Also do not buy a boat with out a full inspection from a marine mechanic(money well spent if you decide not to buy) and take the boat for a test run.
A 1981 complete boat for $1500 could be great, but you may buy a big headache if it needs the floor or transom replaced. Any soft spots or water seeping from them is a sure sign of major work ahead. If you want to do this work then Great.
