octane for 77 merc 1500

i have seen a few things online about people saying to use 89 or 93 octane on old inlines, cause they are prone to detonation. does anyone have a recomendation?

That's exactly what I've always heard. Also read up on timing. I think there was a bulletin from Mercury about backing the max timing down from the original spec due to changes in octane over the years.

I always use 89. One other thing you may want to pay attention to is ethanol. I always use BP gas, which at 99% of stations does not have ethanol. Ethanol, even at 10%, may cause problems.
