Paint over Gelcoat?

Has anyone had experience with a hull that was painted over the gelcoat? Which is preferred? Restoring the gelcoat coat or simply painting it.

Secondly, what if you want to restore to gelcoat finish back from an exisiting paint spray. Wow, hard to follow but I hope this makes since.

My Enforcer is painted in standard automotive base coat/clear coat. It looks great and is a few years old now. The only major down side it is does not hold up as well as gel. It scratches easier..
