Part Source?

Diane

Member
Looks like I need a stator. I inspected the wires coming from it and noticed that one of the two yellow wires is corroded. That wire goes to the rectifier.

Checked the AC voltage:
Red/RedWhite 11
Blue/BlueWhite 85

So.. any recommendations on how to buy this stator? The guy local to me has Part #398-5454A17 for $168 and the flywheel puller for $60 but the puller won't be in for two weeks and he won't lend me one.
Also.. I'm not sure what exact stator I need. Can't find a serial number on the motor but have been told that it is a 1985 and everything else matches that year. It's a Merc 115hp L6

Any pointers to the right stator and a source for stator and flywheel puller?

Thanks for the help, folks.

The job continues...........

I found a local source for the stator who was a great guy and a long-established Merc dealer. He pulled the flywheel for me, checked my work on the stator replacement, tested my rectifier which I also had to replace, charged the battery, tried to start the motor.. no start.

So we put the boat in the shop and tested the spark wires... only spark on #6. So we tested the switchboxes. Both are bad. The stop circuit is good.

so... looks like I've got to drop another $400 into this motor and replace the powerpacks. thanks for the advice so far. Oh.. the guy said I did a great job on the fuel system so far and he thinks the motor looks to be in great shape otherwise. All this and he didn't charge me for anything but parts. He's a god.

His switchboxes are $205 each and they're backordered for about 3 more weeks he thinks.

Any tips on good sources for under-priced switchboxes?

Diane:

I'll try to say this without sounding like a p****, anyway - this fellow who you took your motor to worked on it for free and now you want to go somewhere else to get the part to get a better price? Do you think that's fair? Let the guy make his money on the part. Good techs are hard to find - sounds like you may have a good one here. Screwing him out of his profit on the part is NOT a way to build a relationship.

I would not have shown you the same courtesy this fellow did when you brought your engine in to his shop? Why? Because I've had the above scenario happen to me and been screwed out of any opportunity to make money on the parts end. So I don't do it. Better to be an idle fool than a busy one. I pride myself on providing excellent service but in return i expect my customers to pay for that service - and they do.

If you do buy your parts elsewhere the VERY least you can do is go back and pay him his shop rate for the hour or so he spent with you. And at least tell him you bought the parts elsewhere so he can cancel the back order.

Lecture over.

Very well done .

He spent alot of time and effort to be a good person and help out. That's rare these day's.He deserves the buisness.

just my 2c

Three weeks is to long to wait. Everything like that can be overnited or second dayed. Three weeks was quick in the 80's someone has that part in stock and that meckanic needs someone who can find these parts for him.

the whole world is BACKORDERED.......... nobody wants to stock more than they have to , even the big companies. i just went thru it with mercury myself (again)

Tell me about it thats the world I live in. Its all "Just in Time" delivery out here. My personal best time is 1200 miles 23hrs.
Its the prase "backordered" I used to work for and industrial supply house. and my boss never wanted to here the words backorder or I don't know. It was always find out where it is and find the answer.

However if this mechanic is any good buy the parts from him. Bring him coffee. anything.
I've got a good mechanic for my truck and he charges about half the going rate. And doesnt try to gouge me for stupid repairs. If I'm stuck somehere he can tell me a fix that can get me home or to the nearest garage. I buy this guy lunches let his son use my corvette for the prom. I sweep the shop floor. hand him tools what ever. Good mechanics are hard to come by make them your freinds.

Give rick @ rickracers a call. See if he can get them faster. If he is cheeper then I would take them to the mechanic and have him install them and pay him for his time with the differance. I agree a good wrench turner is hard to find.
