please help

the gear ratio is fine, it is the most common. the lower ratios are for bigger motors, and the higher ratio would be for a smaller high revving motor. as far as the weld ???? no clue here.

i guess, but i would want to know what caused it to need the welding. you do not want to break off a skagg at speed. also, he noted that the torque tab has been ground off.... i am not sure how much torque steer that tab gets rid of.

no, it is advertised as a cle. if it is, it it is a high performance mercury gearcase. what 83predictor may be refering to is the fact that that lower, like my sportsmaster will actually slow your boat down if you are not running near or above 80 mph. those gear cases are designed for running at the surface of the water, henc the pick up being on the bottom of the cone. if you are running your prop well below the pad and not worried about jacking the motor way up for flat out speed, it is not needed.

All of the above info is correct. It is a CLE. It is designed for high-performance applications, etc. I just purchased a simlilar gearcase ( CLE) off Ebay for an engine I'm building and had of course some reservations as to exactly what I was buying .Because once it shows up on your doorstep....IT'S YOUR'S!

Your greatest concern if you decide that it's an OK lower unit is what's it worth to you and what are you willing to pay for it? This one has a reserve price on it. Mine didn't and I had already decided that based on it's condition and from I saw in the picture ( it was/ is about a 6/10) I was only going to pay about $500 for it. This one looks like a nicer one than mine. You decide what it's worth. I've seen just CLE housings ONLY sell for $400. Clean complete ones go for up to $1600.

Somethin' to chew on as they say...But I wouldn't worry about this one not being an ok unit. I'd say that it IS!!

Been running that same LU for 14 seasons with out a single proplem. The only thing to watch out for if its a 2 holer is that seaweed tends to get sucked in and it only takes something the size of a postage stamp to start to over heat the Engine.I've been over the side more times than I care to remember removing the inspection plate & cleaning it out with a tool made from a coat hanger, some times in 2+ ftrs. Not fun So just take care to aviod any and all seaweed when your chugging along and keep an eye on your themostat at all times all you'll be fine. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

See you out on St.Clair this summer:cheersmerc245

What did he think he was getting for $110 ( w/a $50 " whale tail on it..) ? " Caveat Emptor...is what applies here.

Ya, you don't want a nosecone LU. With only 200 ponies it would probably slow you down. The CLE doesn't like to be trimmed out, so you would need massive setback to get the bow lift you need.
