predictor cables and gearshift

Went to Higgins Friday night, dumped the boat in the water and when shifting to leave the lagoon, CLUNK. No gear. Lever mechanism jammed up, so I FORCED it. Heard metallic "clunk" in the remote control housing. Pulled the boat out.

Visited a few marinas, finally ended up at a junkyard and miraculously found a complete control unit that had the gear that I needed. Took it back, found out there were two gears broken [the gearshift detent and gearshift pinion gears]. The pinion gear has three teeth that engage the detent gear, and the middle tooth was broken. I broke the larger detent gear when I forced it.

So you guessed it, the pinion gear on the new box was broken as well. Weekend over. The guy at the junkyard gave me my $60 back tho, which was mighty damn nice of him. If you ever need used parts, visit Valley Sales on County Road 100 near Houghton Lake.

So now I need to order the pinion gear [43-65734] and new cables at lunch. I don't know the length of the cables, so that might have to wait unless someone else has a Predictor with the 1150 and knows the length....

The weather is supposed to hold this weekend, hopefully I can get it fixed in time.

Here's a valuable lesson though: CHANGE YOUR CONTROL CABLES WHEN THEY START TO MOVE HARD.

Just to have this in the archives for people to search: The cable length for a '79 Predictor with the stock 1150 and control box is 10'6".
