prop selection?

this last sunday i was able to take out my 91 convincer 251 gtx, and what a blast! my problem is that i am turning 5200 rpm at wot. i knew when i bought the boat the prop was not going to work, but thought id try it anyway. the motor is a 502 mag, bravo 1, and the prop on it is a 23 pitch marage. i was thinking more on the lines of a 25 or 26 pitch, but i honestly do not know what prop to run.i dont want to buy a prop and not be happy with it, nor do i have the option of trying someones prop because all my friends are currently running 23 pitch. any help would be greatly apreciated.:brickwall:

the 502 mag is ok at that rpm, does it have a rev limiter? is it efi or carb?
the efi motor rev limit is around 5050.
if your bouncing off the limiter then definately go with the bigger prop. if not, i think your in the ball park for sure. what gps speeds are you seeing? you may also like a 4 blade, like the bravo prop.
see if any board members have props to try. i have always had success finding props to try for around 250 or so, if you like it you can clean it up or have it labbed.....dont buy junk though!!!

it is a 502 mag carb. dont know about gps speed until i go back out and check it. the tag on the engine says wot 5400 to 5600 and that is why i thought i was over revving. other than that, what a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

well, if it hasnt been modified at all then you should stay in that range. as far as the motor goes, the 502s lower end should be good to handle that rpm with no problem but the cam may only make power to 4600.
im not too sure on what youve got there, i would stick with the 4600 if i were you unless you know the "rest of the story"

thanks, the motor is completely stock and has 400 very well cared for hours on it. i will try a couple props and let you know how i make out. again,,,,, thanks

Definetly go with a 4 blade Bravo 1. I would think that a labbed 26" would bget you just about where you want it to be. You wont believe the difference between a 3 and 4 blade prop. I liked it so much, I went for a 5 blade.
