removing nose cone??

I have a 1984 235 evinrude with a nose cone on it. It does not look like most nose cones as it is just a torpedo in front of the propshaft, and looks like it does not attach along the entire front of the lower unit like most. The boat it is on is a 1984 18'3" eluder. It will never get above low 70s as is, and think the cone could be hurting the performance at these speeds. Does anyone have any input on this? Also, how well do transom mount pick-ups work? I saw for $49 bobsmachine.com makes a transom mount pick-up, but would be concerned of drag? Thanks in advance for all your help.
 
do you need a low water pickup? is the engine raised to that point? if so the transom mount style will cause minimal drag. they work fine.

as far as the nose cone goes, it is most likely costing you only a couple mph if any at all.

I would leave it on if the lower units finish looks good. if you remove it you will have to repaint it. if the current paint job is peeling or is cracking you may as well take off the cone.

when I removed the old cone on mine I chiseled away the epoxy around the
edges. I then heated the whole cone with a heat gun. get it super hot. then use a large screw driver the pry the cone off.

you are on your own for repainting the LU. i just primered mine.
 
yes, I raise the jackplate up, trim it out as far as I can before the water pres. droping off, and it keeps wanting more, but dont wanna run it w/ no water. I just touched up the lower unit this summer, and the cone job was super solid. I figured if I installed a transom mount pick-up I should fill the intake holes anyway, so figured it would be a good time to take the cone off if I am gonna. Is it possible for the cone to have been welded on? Thanks for the info man, that clears the process up alot. I've got the rest of winter, and figure its an easier way to gain a couple mph than tearing into the engine any more. Thanks
 
the cone may be welded. you wouldnt know until you started getting into it. then you would have a bit more work.

if you are going to raise it up all the way and run a chopper style prop you may want to leave the cone on. choppers can "blow out" at 70+ mph. a nose cone will help part the water so this does not happen.

on my setup after i added the cone i noticed a 1-2 mph loss at the same trim level. i gained that back by trimming up just a CH more.

IMHO i would leave the cone on since it looks good now, install a transom mount LWPU, and jack it to the sky. this way you have no work in taking it off and repainting the LU. plus, you can be sure you will not have any blow out at higher speeds.

i am sure once you are able to raise it up to level with the bottom and prop up you will gain some MPH. I gained 5 mph doing so.
