Replacing water rails on a 496

Tski17

New member
The threading that connects the connector to the water rails on my 496 merc has corroded (I use the boat in salt water)on both of my water rails which has caused water to leak from this connection. I am assuming I am going to have to replace both water rails and both of the connectors. Does anyone have any tips before I start this process? I know I am going to have to get 4 new o-rings for each water rail, but would appreciate anything you all can add.

Thanks.

Tim

I've done several of these. I suggest you pull the manifold, then try to remove the alan head bolts that hold the rails on. The ones that I have gotten apart needed new manifolds because of excessive corrosion around the oring areas (or just ate up) or the alan heads snapping, wont tighten back up etc.
