shaft length?

i know this is a dumb question but... my mx14 has a 19" transom. according to what ive read short shafts are for 15-17" transoms and long for 20" plus transoms w/ a 1-2" margin of error. technically this should mean i could run either. which is better?

long shafts are more common these days and you'll have an easier time finding a long shaft with power trim than a short shaft with power trim.
