i found an 87 starflite with a merc 245 with a 6" hydo jack plate..not sure bout prop...question is any idea of.. mph.. round about it should run..thanks

how far from Tuckerton? I think you should run a touch over 70 depending on prop selection. If you need anything I am guessing I am very close. Good luck! We will have to meet up on the water.

Mike

Thanks ...it has a Mazco 3 not sure size tho..I'm in williamstown..it's about 60 miles to from me..I'll let you u what happens..guys a ill high on price in this market

Been running that combo for 17 years. Is it a true 2.5 carbed 245 h.p. What cle lower unit does it have 2 or 5 hole. be aware of the 2 holes unit. The larger 2 holes allow for seaweed to enter and block the water flow. it don't take much about the size of a thumbnail, turning at 7000-7500 rpm they blow quick. If it has a 2 hole always have a way to open the inspection plate and a coat hanger bent like a button hook to fish out the proplem from the bottom up.

As for props I've never spun anything else then the lazor II 21p that came on it. All out top end never worried me. The starflite is a heavy hull for that mota, suited more the hi flyers and ultra lights. Low torgue-high rpms so don't overload with to much prop enless running nearer the surface.
With the 21p new and dry hull it spun out to 7500rpms right at 75mph with the 5.5 cmc hyd jack. Now with 15.5 setback with a wet, tired hull still over 70 mph.

Learn to drive 1 eye on water, 1 eye the presssure gage, 1 eye tempture gage, 1 eye on your fuel gage, a look out for water out streams and ear to the rear you really shouldn't have a proplem. Oh and change your rings every 200-400 hrs too! The good ones are $500 a set.

Cheers: merc245 (get it)

wow thats alot of eyes!:poke:

Really depends on condition overall and motor compression. Might not be a bad price if it is in good condition. I always assume there is 500-1000 in negotiation. Also depends how bad they want to unload it. Good luck let me know if you need anything.

I'm not an expert but it seems like those motors are bad ass but high maintenance and expensive to repair. Maybe you can buy the boat, sell the motor, and then spend whatever you got for the old motor combined with some of your savings off the original price for a less high strung powerplant? One thing about these hulls, they kind of like a heavier motor hanging off the back so a 3 liter Merc won't necessarily be a bad thing.

Over on scream and fly you can learn a whole lot about these mota's. what its worth, worth in peices, hell a clean cowling and pan can fetch $500.00, a nice cle can bring $1000.00. I found my merc gold rings priced at $550 I found them for $425.

That sounds like a plan..buy it and part it out..i know those motors are bad ass i just dont need the hastle..Thank you guys for your help and ideas.. It definitely helps..now I just have to set the plan in motion..lol

Jerz,

There is one in Sea Isle with a 200 for $4,900. Would be a decent ride for the cash. Everyone is negotiable.

The 245 Carb motor is a great powerplant. No crazy electronics like the 260's/280's. The boat should easily run low to mid 70's with the right prop...even faster with more setback. I run a 2-hole CLE on my AE-21 and have never had any problems with clogging. The 2-hole CLE is the more desireable gearcase when it comes to CLE's. If the motor has a knock..it's still worth buying and doing a rebuild. You'll wind up with a nickel motor that's bullit proof and runs like a raped ape!! Go for it!!
