steering cable

i have a 88 starfire with a alpha one and i have play in the steering cable. the outdrive is tight and so is the tiller arm so i've decided it must be in the cable plus its a 88 and i want to replace it anyway. so how do i know what cable to get. all i know is that its red. you would think there was someway to adjust the cable but i can't find one
