Stern Drive Issues

Question for the Pros:

When taking my 260hp aphla 1 gen 2 from reverse or forward to neutral, it appears the boat is staying in gear barely when neutral position is reached. By "barely" I mean I can hear a noise that resembles the gear being partially engaged and the shaft continues to spin slowly.

Whats going on and what do I need to do to fix it? Would the position of the stern drive (up/down) effect this problem?

Not a pro but I would check the cable and linkage for wear/looseness. It may be as simple as a cable adjustment. Did you ever fix the slop in your outdrive? This may be related.

I second that....Check your cable adjustment. Also, if the neutral-cutoff switch is not functioning properly, it can hinder the gears engaging/disengaging due to the nature of helical cut gears in an alpha. That is the small switch that is on the shift bracket. If it is working properly, it should cut spark to the engine when you depress the roller lever slightly.

I agree with the shift interup switch. Had the same problem and slightly bent the ball lever. Problem fixed. Easy way is to make sure by pushing lever back if it does drop rpm's down close to a stall to see if switch works.

Could be an adjustment issue, need to do it as per manual. On older boats its very common for the drive shift cable to get stickey or bind at times.
