Stumbled on another mate... (long)

A while back I joined this great site to gain info on an Enticer that was left for dead. I've decided to pass on that project.

Well, another Checkmate found me and was calling my name over the weekend. This one is an 83 Diplomat with a 100hp Evinrude on it. The floor has been redone, glassed in, but not glassed over. They rebuilt the rear seating structure with 2x4's. Carpet is all fine, seats have been re-covered (just an ok job here). Exterior of the hull is clean and in good shape, although they painted the rub rail… probably thinking it would look cleaner… the bootstripe / rubrail would have to be redone to actually look good. Although the floor was redone, they didn’t address the rotten “shelf” between the rear seat and the transom. The transom seemed solid pounding on it, but I did notice a very slight sunk in indention on one of the motor mount bolts.

While I would like more horses on her, the motor looked very clean and it’s reported to have less than 250 hours on it (and looking at it, I believe it).

Price is $2500. Any thoughts on the rotten “shelf” and the motor mount bolt? If I go back I’ll check the transom by pulling and pushing the motor (check for flex). Do you think a Diplomat would hit 45mph with the 100 Rude? Thanks for any discussion, thoughts, or advice.

If the transom is starting to pull the mounting bolts through then its getting soft or already is rotten.
40-45 would be about right with 100hp.

Diplomat is the better choice of the small Mates. Wider, deeper and just as fast. You're on the right track.
If the transom flexes when you pull on the motor it is shot. But it could be in bad shape even if it doesn't. What shelf are you talking about behind the back seat? If it is the 3-4" horizontal reinforcement glassed right across the length of the transom and it is rotten then the transom is also likely rotten.
Sometimes an isolated soft spot around a bolt hole can develope and if that's all it is that can be fixed by drilling small holes on the inside to flush out moisture and inject low viscosity epoxy.
Also if the entire rubrail needs to be replaced you will suprised at what it ends up costing. The rubber alone is about $100.
