Trim quit working.

1987 sportfire with a 135 mercury. Trim worked when I put it in the garage last weekend. Then a couple of days later no trim movement up or down, but makes a clicking noise. No $$ for the boat shop. Any tips?

Welcome to the wonderful world of boats. The cheap hope is that the solenoids have gone south. bad news is the motor has crapped out. Mercury does not sell just a trim motor for most outboards - its a complete unit to the tune of 1000.00. I am fighting this one now and in my case (sterndrive) the motor was shot and is at the rebuilders right now. Check the simple stuff first, bad ground etc., but more than likely you'll find the solenoids need replacing, they aren't to expensive though.

Pump motors

Chris you can buy replacement motors for merc trim pumps they're not cheap either but they are available.

the newer style motors have two wires going into them.. since were talking both outboard and inboard.. were going to separate them..

the outboard sereies rides in the water behind the boat.. in the water tucked up against the transom under your power head.. its probably bad.. and you'll probably have to take the outboard off to repair it.. now how far you get jiggy with this depens on corrosion .. ususally its one back bolt or screw which reqires the separation of the engine and boat.. and if rigged right.. you can do this w/o having to remove any cable or wiring.. and yada yada...

the i/o version normally sits in the engine compartment.. and normally rigged so that a hatch leaks all over them.. and never ever well thought out.. but the motors normally dont go south. apply a power source to one wire (blue or green) and a ground to the other .. again either one.. if the motor turns, your problem lies elswhere

bad trim limit switches do the same thing.. bad switch at the dash.. will do the same thing.. corroded wiring.. and the list can go on and on..

hey happy - this seems to be an epidemic this year - mine turned out to be the motor - and that was a fair bit of head scratching as i had it rebuilt in 99. i took it to the rebuilders and we bench tested it. the parts individually worked but assembled they didn't - new cap and amrature cleaned up and away we go.

water does nasty things huh... and oooooowweeeee salt water just bisbehaves 24/7.. i notice at the shop.. repairs seem to go in waves.. ie water pumps one week, engine couplers the next.. yada yada.. and i apologize for my frame of thinking.. by not addressing that some of you do your own repairs.. so you dont have labor to consider.. i've been doing this so long.. that labor additive is insticnt.. i always have to weigh the cost and benefit.. so forgive me for being blind in this arena...

Trim fixed

I don't know what the problem was but it works now. I was trying to pull the trim vet plug and their was no head on the bolt or screw. Someone must of broke it before. So I started drilling, drill bit broke then I lost it! So I started useing a punch and hammer for a while just trying anything. After a while I tried useing trim just for the hell of it and yup it working again. SO WHEN IN DOUT HAMMER IT OUT!
