Just wondering? In your opion which is a better motor a early 90's 150hp XR4 Mercury or a 150 hp 2.5L EFI XRI Would the EFI Smoke less at low speed? thanks I have the 1993 XR4 now but could have the XRI if I want!

I'd have to say go with the 2.5 EFI just on basic fundamentals alone first. You are getting the big block over the 2 liter on the your current motor plus an EFI engine. Now I have had a number of V6 Mercs over the years ( Still do) and they have performed well. But like any manufacturer they all have had a few models w/gremlins in them and I'm not sure if this was one of them. I don't recall it being one but I'm not sure. Check on it w/a dealer to see if had any issues. I'd be surprised but you never know. I was selling Yamaha's when that motor came out.

the xr4 is a 2.4litre. EFI or carbs both have there issues carbs make it easier to tweak on the motor but if you mod an EFI you can send the ECU out for a recurve. And there are just as many people that love the 2.4 as much as the 2.5

Only real differences would be a little better hole-shot on the 2.5 XRi and maybe a touch better fuel mileage over the XR4. XR4 is just as fast top end though. Like Blizz said, you can make that XR4 faster than the XRi easier, but if you want to blow a lot of cash the 2.5 will end up being faster in the end. IF I had a choice and the price was identical and the motors were in identical shape, I'd go for the 2.5 XRi.

As the guys said, not much of a trade up. Probably will smoke a little less at idle thou. Performance tests over the years will actually show better fuel economy from the carbed motor(very slight). I wouldn't do it unless it was a cheap or free swap. If you are going to trade up, go to new technology DFI like Opti, HPDI or Etec.
