prop opnions

Well-known member
looking to buy a prop for my 21 sratflite....... 200merc, 12inch plate running 2.5"prop shaft height as of right now! i'm turning a 23 quiksilver at 6400 at63.7gps. looking for a lil' more top end but don't wana lose the mid range and any more low end even though i don't pull anyone behind the boat! if anything i would lose a lil' on the low end and gain on the high end! i was wondering if there was anyone that has a prop i can try before i buy! have the cash in hand if it's what i need!!!! thanks for any help!:cheers

Is your engine healthy or old and tired??I just got the turning pt 25 4 blade Great bite on take off and turns and a Wicked ROOSTER at 50mph,,it was calculated to run 69 ant 5800,,but I guess my 1991 200 is getting tired..Only ran 58mph today..My raker 23-14.5 was running 61 before it was rebuilt..might be getting ready to sell unless Boatman can get me a 23TP

it is a lil' tired but not bad! i would say if it is turning a 23p @ 6400 i will turn a 25p @ around 6k! and that is what i want......don't know if i want a 4 or 3blade though?????? what are the advantages of a 4 blade besides take-off?

woops my raker is a 22 not 23,
My raker wicked rooster at about 38mph plate all the way up.
4 blade ran 50 with a wicked rooster..
4blade dug deep,,can pull a hard u turn without cavaitating(catching air)
Boat jumps right into plane..I like it alot but 25 is to much for my boat..
My 3 blade has to be driven with care..making gentle turns.or I have to set the engine all the way down for a hard turn..I like the performance of the 4blade..

I am assuming your Quicksilver is an aluminum. They will spin a lot more R's than a SS. A 25" might be a bit steep for a 20 year old 200 Merc. I would think a 24" 4 blade will get you to 5800-6000 RPM. The math; 6400 RPM...go to SS -200 RPM's, add one blade -200 RPM, add one inch pitch -200 RPM = 5800 RPM.
The 4 blades do everything better than a 3 blade except maybe wide open straight runs. (The Tempest will give you the best bow lift for that, but I think they suck at everything else.) Advantages of 4 blade (Trophy, TRO4 etc); better holeshot, better grip, better handling, less ventilation, less steering torque, less chine walk... Trade off; 1-2 MPH @ WOT.

you say the trophy 4 blade will give me 1-2mph more and all the other? or do i want to go with a 25or 26 tempest?

hey ross, with the 4 blade you will lose 1-2 mph top end but gain performance everywhere else. if you want to go faster in a straight line stay with a 3 blade.

what quicksilver prop do you have? i may be interested in it if you find a new one.

you say the trophy 4 blade will give me 1-2mph more and all the other? or do i want to go with a 25or 26 tempest?
1-2 MPH LESS with a 4 blade. Tempest is actually harder to turn because it is large hub. With a 26 or even a 25 Tempest your hole shot will SUCK. I keep telling everyone that the Starflite with a small block Merc likes the over/through of a small hub 4 blade. But...try as many props as you can get your hands on, that's the fun part.

everyone on here has different opinions as to what prop is the best for this style of boat! aslo you all say to try every prop you can get your hands on..... my problem is there is no dealer in my area that will let you try before you buy! i don't want to get in the situation where i buy a prop and have it be the wrong one and have to sell it for less than what i bought it for! any one else have this problem w/ dealers in there area? and if so what did you end up doing?

matt- what do you want to know about the quiksilver besides it's a 23p? let me know and i'll look at it- all it says is (quiksilver 48 11074 A40 23p)

Almost no dealers will let you try a prop. That is pretty much a myth that they will. Secondly, who would buy a new prop when you can get a used one mint for 1/3 to 1/2 the price? Depending on where you boat you might try to befriend some other boaterheads to swap props with. Finally, search the board on the Starflite setup and you will see the majority of guys with your combo end up with a small hub 4 blade.

see the small hub lets the exhaust flow over it letting you get some higher rpms on take off. this lets you swing a bigger pitch.

thanx matt- waiting for (f150gt) to pm me as to he has a ton of knowledge when it comes to this boat but what is your input on the prop i want?????

Listen to Mark, he's right on spot.
Speed comes hard with the Starflight and 200hp in marginal condition is going to be tuff to get good speed numbers, A strong running 200 is barley enough to get the Flights to air out and the set up has to be perfect to get it.
Are there any other performance boaters were you live & boat? Go hang out with them, get to know them and see what they have & run.

i will say that i'm the only checkmate this size where i boat and all the others are 26' and bigger with i/o's that is why i come to you guys so much!!!! i like to run w/ the bigger boats when it is calm and am trying to keep-up...... just trying to make a name for us guys when i can beet some of these bigger baots!!!!!!! thanks for all te help and when i do start doing what i have planned we will have some knew supporting members on this bored....... that is when they catch up and ask what i have done to my lil' check!!! a glorius day that will be!

i am pretty limited in my knowledge when it comes to starflights. ask me anything about a predictor and ill tell ya what you need to know. :thumb:

i can only offer what i have seen with mine.

hopefully it will be a done deal tonight! i've talked to gary and if hobie doesn't want to sell his tp25 4 blade then i'll be getting one of those in the next week or two! thanks for the help matt!
