prop testing......

Well-known member
well- for all of you that have been following my desire to try a different prop....

here we go... i'm running my quiksilver 23p at 6400 and 2.5" prop shaft height at 63.7. i bought a 25 laser 2 and at the same prop shaft height i was at 5800r's and 56.6 best i saw on the gps!!!!! both are 3 blade and i guess it's time for a rebuid....i was a lil' loaded w/ all the stuff to stay on the boat but still should have seen much better.... a chopper for now???? andy- i need your input and also will a 4 blade 23 or 25 will help???? any input would be great!!!! -ross

Strip the boat of everything extra, 1/2 tank of fresh super unleaded, find a quiet cool smooth water morning and try both props at veried heights.
I was afraid that you wouldnt be able to spin the 25 but I thought it would do better than that, make a few runs with it so you have accurate info.

well he had 14 percent slip with the 23

seems strange to go to a 4 blade and have more slip
maybe overtrimming or under trimming

what is the diameter of the quicksilver?
daren

we are guessing that load and temps were about the same for both runs and gps was for speed

both props are 3 blade- and both are of the same diameter the loads were the same and the temops were the same ..... both runs were within about 1/2 hour of each other! just couldn't get the motor to "wind" up if you will. the other thing is i was suprised to see the rpm's come down 600 from a 23 to a 25!! is this common?

more pitch usually meens less rpm so you are right around where you should be. BUT...... the slip has gone up to 22%. make a couple more runs to be sure your numbers are correct.

this 25 may be just a CH too large and you have used more trim resulting in the higher slip %.

What mota you runnin? I run a 22p chopper on mine that I had worked for more bow lift, I love it, it's a bit loose at top speed but once you get good at driving it, its' the perfect prop for a starflite w/ a smaller engine. My takeoff is awesome, throws you back in the seat and it really hooks on the top end with little slip. -shane

sorry i was thinking trophy
i had to go reread what was posted

you might be better off with a 4 blade 23

should carry the boat better with less slip

i went from a 23p 3blade to a 25p 3 blade-lost 600rpm??? seems like alot.... i'm running a stock 200 merc black max. i have not had time to get back out and play w/ it but i thought i'd be able to turn the 25 since i was turning the 23@6400..... maybe not.....-ross

if it is a used prop there is no telling what has been done to it

could be a 26 pitch with extra cup now

take it to a reputable prop shop and see

daren

daren- i will say the prop is dull! i thought about puting a good edge on it before i go out next and see if that helps any! my 23 is as sharp as a knife and the 25 is as dull as a spoon right now! -ross

That sounds about right. The Lasers work fine for lighter boats since they do not have a lot of blade area. You are slipping because you are trying to push too much boat with it. The Starflite, being a heavy hull, needs a prop with more blade area, high rake for lift and heavy cup for grip. The Tempest fits the bill if you just want to go straight.
The other side of the equation is you only have 200 ponies to turn it. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this is where the small hub 4 blade comes in. The 4 blades gives you the blade area and the small hub lets you spool up more quickly as you have some exhaust gas flowing over the blade. Based on your above results, a 23" (or maybe a 24?) Trophy will be your prop. A 25" will be too much.
The chopper will give you good top end but because it is a full over-the-hub design it will likely slip like crazy trying to get up on plane. Again, they are designed for lighter boats.

Believe it or not my chopper doesn't slip too much on takeoff, not even in a worst case scenario like a few weeks ago when i had 7 people and coolers in the boat and the jackplate all the way up, i still planed off faster than a lot of I/O's that I know. IMO it slipps just right, i can give it half throttle and it planes off nice and easy and if i mash down the throttle the RPM's shoot up to about 4500 and it hooks up and launches like a rocket. -shane
