Eluder with a 350 mag

X-Streamer

New member
Hello, New to the site and the mate. I have always liked checkmates for there looks and build quality but have been playing with hydrostreams and stv's for the last ten years or so. I just picked up a real clean 82 eluder from a guy who just re-powered with a new 350 Mag carb motor /alpha 1 1.50 drive. The guy said the boat came with a 4 cylinder and spent like 9 grand to put this new package together. The boat is super clean, has a pad bottom and propped right should run 65-70. What do you guys think of the eluders ? It seems from looking around this site, their not to popular. Anybody seen one with a V8? Look like a neat boat with a pretty fast bottom, what do you think? Regards Brooks

I can't speak much for the older mates, but I don't think the eluders are the most rare boats of that era. A 350mag should make that boat sing though. 70mph should be in order if the prop is right. oh... and post pics will ya!!? :bigthumb:

:welcome: congrats on the new 'Mate....lots of good info in here and people to help you out!!!

I have an Eluder (still with the 4cyl) and I have been told by people who would know that it was one of Checkmates best hull designs. Very rare, though. Almost nobody on this board has them or talks about them.

Thanks for the welcome and comments on my eluder. I ran the boat today and was pretty impressed with the performance. My buddy was running my old hydrostream vulture with a stock 225 merc thats runs 78 on gps. I was under propped with a small eared 25 which pulled alot harder than I expected up to 5500. (Whats max r's for this motor 4900-5000?) With the right wheel I think it will break 70 for sure and feels real stable for such a small pad. The neat thing was I could hold my own nose to nose with the stream from 15mph to maybe 60mph. We were both very surprised. Anyway might be fun dialing in this heavy IO mate into a little sleeper. I will post some pics soon. thanks again and any more info on this boat would be great.

sweet! Yeah, that thing should easily break 70 with a good running motor and the proper wheel. Your buddy with a vulture will need some serious worked engine and major set back to get that bow heavy boat to really fly, though at 78mph, he must have done something to that motor!

I sold my friend the vulture and yes it took some playing with to get the right setback. I ended up with 12 inches of set back and a big ear 26 to get it to fly. It runs a strong 78 maybe 80 under perfect conditions. The eluder has a brand new (10 hours) factory complete pan to carb and as well as every bolt on. The guy just spent 9K on the motor and install as well as new drive and everything in betweenand then passed away before the motor was even broke in. I bought the boat and trailer from his wife for 2,800. I figured it was a good deal on a pretty neat little boat. If anybody has any suggestions on what prop would be best let me know. Its a 300hp mag with 1.50 drive. Thanks for the help.:bigthumb:
