I have a 1988 Spectra 171 (closed deck) with a 140 Johnson. If your boat is solid and the compression is good on the motor, I think you got a good deal. These 17 footers weren't made for too many years so that's why you don't hear much about them. Great looking boats. They are solid but on the heavy side for this size of boat. So not as fast as some but a better ride than most in a chop. I get mid-50's out of mine.

Enjoy your boat.

My first Checkmate was a Spectra 170 bowrider with a Merc 150XR2. I would consistantly see speeds in the mid 50's turning a Quicksilver 25 Hi-Five prop. The little boat was a blast and spent alot of time pulling skiiers, tubes, kneeboards, etc. It was solid as a rock and handled good. The guy I sold the boat to sold it to someone else and the boat eventually found it's way to Europe (I think it was Sweden or Germany) !!! The new owner posted some pictures of his floor replacement and I immediatly recognized my old boat!!!! I'll try and search for the thread!

It only took about 15 minutes to find!! but here's the thread from the guy that took my old Spectra to Germany!! I did alot of work on the boat when I got it...removed the tape stripes, wet sanded and aqua buffed the entire hull, removed bottom paint, installed Stewart Warner gages, installed white powder coated grab handle, etc. etc. This guy finished the boat off nicely!!

Picc?

I just picked up a 1989 Spectra 171 closed bow with a Johnson 150GT. I would love to add some pics but can't seem to figure out how. Any help?

you have to be a supporting member to post pix but you can use a host site(photo bucket) and link them here that way.
