There I was, in the passenger seat of my fishing partner's Ranger Reatta 2050. We had just idled out of a shallow area in Devils Lake and passed over a submerged highway (281 for those who care) at a depth of about 2 feet. We were going to go around a large point and work our way up to the shallows again. So we checked the GPS on the lowrance HDS10 and then took off. We knew we had to parallel the sunken highway going north keeping it on our left and then cross the submerged road again. Piece of cake, especially since the sunken highway runs straight north and south on the GPS. BUT...we didn't have the chart zoomed out far enough and didn't see that approximately half a mile to the north, the submerged highway angled NE. Well, we found the highway...with the lower unit...of his 225 Pro XS...going about 55 mph. What an aweful sound. The boat didn't even lurch or slow down...sounded like a shotgun went off. It could have been a lot worse. We had out eyes out front looking at the water for logs and debris...not at the GPS screen...SON OF A....!
