Hey there, good to see another 89 out in the wild! AS far as our boat, I bought it from the second owner, and he only owned it for 2 years. The original owner was down in Indiana and had the boat on a covered lift for it's entire life. The Gelcoat is in very good shape, and I have not had to wetsand any part of the boat yet. The deck and around the engine hatch are starting to show signs of oxidation, but the only thing I have done to combat that is use a mild to medium buffing compound once a season, and then wax it.
As to your question about breaking through the gel and re-clearing, I would do a search in the "Gel Coat, Paint and Graphics" threads on the forum. there is a lot of great info in those threads, and a lot of info dedicated to wetsanding and compounding.
also, if you have the time, start a new thread with pictures of the existing conditions and the help will come pouring in.
