Need to replace my Merc 496

Smartcraft - lots of little things, including the water intakes rusting through (saltwater boat). I could spend the money to fix that but I figure why not spend a bit more and start fresh.

Need to replace my Merc 496

Guys, I have an '01 ZT240 with a Merc 496 in it with about 800 hrs.... One issue after another is popping up so I think I want to replace my engine. Do I need to replace with another 496 or are there other options that won't require me to rebuild the entire engine compartment? Appreciate any...

Not turning over - loose connection maybe?

Guys, I have a ZT240 with a 496 and seperate throttle and shift controls. Lately when I have been trying to start the engine, I have to wobble the shift control slightly in and out of neutral to get the engine to turn over. I am assuming that wherever the connection is that tells that it is...

    496 missing

The fuel is fresh and the boat has been run consistently over the last few years... never sitting more than a month between runnings, and in most cases every weekend. I dont think the engine has ever had a tune up, so the plugs, wires and coils are probably still the originals. I am going to...

    496 missing

While running yesterday at about 3000 rpm, my engine started missing... sounded like a cylinder wasnt firing sort of... The tach bogged down a few hundred rpm also.... I slowed down to idle and it seemed to be ok. After powering back up, it did the same thing. When I got back to the dock I...

Replacing water rails on a 496

The threading that connects the connector to the water rails on my 496 merc has corroded (I use the boat in salt water)on both of my water rails which has caused water to leak from this connection. I am assuming I am going to have to replace both water rails and both of the connectors. Does...

Bravo One Power Steering Actuator Replacement

Has anyone had to replace one of these before? I have an 01 ZT240 with 496 driving a Bravo One and there is significant play in the steering, which I have traced back to the actuator being very loose and needing to be replaced. Is this a tricky repair? Appreciate any help that can be given.

    26P vs. 24P Bravo One

the graphics are factory, i actually have a little bit of fading on red graphics on the port side, if the price is right i am going to get all of the coloring redone over the winter. i lost about 300 rpm with the prop switch, but with the 24p i was hitting almost 5100 rpm on my 496 and setting...

    26P vs. 24P Bravo One

i run the bravo hard and it has worked well for me... i have about 450 hours on in and just replaced the gimbal bearing and bellows this last august. the 26p prop and base 496 are the perfect combo for my 240.

496 with bravo one flush kit

Is there a kit made to flush a 496 paired to a bravo one.... I see mercruiser has one on their website for a 496, but not when paired with a bravo one - or are earmuffs the only option?
