I honestly have no idea how Mercury, or buyers for that matter, justify the absurd prices of their engines, i can build a 525hp Mopar (much more expensive than a BB Chevy) for a hell of alot less than $45 grand!! I think you are right tho, $80,000 would be a fair price for the boat today, i know the boat is pretty much show room perfect!!

I am still amayzed at the prices of these Merc race engines --- just as you said, I can build a big blown mopar elephant motor to brand new specs for around 35,000 putting out some serious hp and tourque.

Geez I just looked at a brand new run of the mill garden variety Merc 350 mag and it was frikin 10 grand.:irked:

Mercs prices are usually for stern drive packages, so motor, drive and everything in between. You are paying for their r n d, their motors run longer than most, and warranty as well. It's really not that cheap to build a modern efi engine. If you sat down and priced everything out aftermarket you would definetly save some money but a lot less than you would think and you would have a bunch of Dyno time in dialing it in and then the real question would be how long would it live?

I agree. it's a complete package and I bought one of those packages brand new in 1997, the HP500. I have the dollar numbers for the upgrade but it really doesn't matter. I felt $50k at the time was a fair price to get a brand new boat with a Mercury racing motor. If it wasn't for the inner valve spring breaking, which they were known for, the motor has never been apart and neither the drive. I was just out yesterday and still ran a 72.4 gps without even trying and that's as good as the day i bought it and all I do is turn the key everyday.

heard that you could still special order a 270br. but I could be wrong. I would like to see a ZT350BR

Bottom line is you can still pick up my kayak for a mere $1000. AND it's purple, errr raspberry. And teal.
Bargainhunters dream.

Funny, everyone kept calling my boat the "pink boat".
It's RASBERRY!:irked:
I finally gave it a makeover and no more pink/rasberry boat.

no, just a wrap, basically a big decal over the blue and rasberry and then changed out the gauge bezels and interior.
The original gel colors are still there.
I should post a thread on it. Have a slideshow of the change.

Ya, I'll have to agree with you Budman {I know my thoughts are fip flopping a little from my previous post} --- I did purchase a brand new 454/Bravo set up a few years back and it was and still is a rock solid perfectectly running very low maintainence engine --one of my friends still has it in the boat I sold him 8 years ago --- still runs and sounds great.
So, when talking new prices of these Merc engines, ya they are sold at "premium" prices however at least with Merc you will for the most part get what you pay for --- they do make some seriously good marine engines.

In my humble opinion, the boat is a 60Kish boat in this market. It's a nice boat and the guy can ask what he wants but then there is also reality....
