175 Verado

Anybody have an opinion on the new Mercury 175 Verado? I'm thinking of replacing my XR6 and from what I've been reading I am really starting to like the Verado... even though it is 100 pounds heavier.

Don't you currently have a 150? If you're going to repower I would skip the 175 and go right to the 200's, not the Verado though, that one might sink the boat. If you get a 175, within one year you will be wanting something bigger, size does matter.

I would look for a 200 efi or a 225 promax, I am kind of shopping around for more power now also.

I'm with jgreen and jwh445 on this. Going from 150 to 175 isn't going to get you what your after. The weight differance alone will eat up the 25hp gain the Verado has.

I'm not really looking to go 70 or 80 mph. I like the Verado because it is quiet, fuel injected and would be easy on gas. It is only 100 heavier than my XR6 and my boat would still be legal.

Hey Drex, this months boating magazine has a write-up of this motor. A lot of dough but if you think it is worth it, get it. I have never seen a Checkmate with a 4 stroke and a lot of people say that 4 strokes are over rated. It will cost you more in maintence than a 2 stroke. Just my two cents... I hope you are able to zoom in and read this..........

Easy on Gas??? I realize that the Contender they are trying to push w/ that motor is a heavy bugger with a very deep V, but I sure would have expected more than 2.3 mpg. I figure 2mpg when estimating fuel needs on my 10 yr old OMC carbed 175 on a 3000 lb. Mako. It usually works out close.

They did some tests with this motor and the e-tech and the e-tech was just as close if not better on gas. I am not a fan of Evinrude but that E-tech has me thinking... I would never spend that kind of money on a new motor. My boat is paid for and when and if the motor blows I will rebuild it. That motor cost almost double what I paid for my boat complete. I guess thats why I am not in debt...
