1973 MX-13

I'm currently running a 1973 Johnson 65 with a 21 pitch prop. With the motor trimmed at position 3 of 5 and light on gas and weight, I can run about 37 wide open and will run smooth at 32 all day long.

My question is with that motor and prop, and more or less a stock setup is that a reasonable speed or should I be getting more out of the motor?? BTW, the motor does not idle very well, and runs really good at 75% - 95% throttle position.

Are there any Checkmate rally's near Asheville, NC?? We take our boat to Lake Norris, TN and Lake Keowee, SC and hoping to get to more this summer.

Not much Checkmate action in the South, but it looks like it's picking up. Just keep up on here, maybe we can get something together at Lake Hartwell or Lake Murray or something. I know we have some guys in NC, AL and SC. Either of those may be a fairly central location.

That seems a little slow to me TJ. I wouldn't expect 60 or anything, but I would think that setup would at least get to the high 40's. I would wonder if the boat has soaked up water, or if you're losing a cylinder (rough idle).

I'm running a 96 Johnson 70HP on a 72 MX-13, 5 in Setback/5 in Jack Plate with a 13-1/2 x 25 balanced/blueprinted OMC cleaver and GPS at 57. You should be getting a more out of your set-up...try raising the engine first, (watching RPM/water pressure), and try and many props as you can get your hands on.

Hope this is of some help and good luck!

Hi Brad,

I had that same set up on my old Mx-13 with a 1993 70hp Johnson.

Do you get too much stern lift with the Cleaver?

Have you tried a Chopper prop?

I just sold a 1973 Mx-13 I had lying around yesterday for $450.00

Love those boats.

Maybe the new owner will post pics of the restoration he is gonna do.
