1973 MX-15 FOR SALE

CheckmatePhill

New member
1973 MX-15 with a 1972 80 HP Merc and a great trailer. The boat is very solid, it is gold and brown flake, the clear gel coat is peeling in some spots. It has two tan back to back seats which have a few minor stains from a previous owner storing tires on them. The rest of the interior is decent and is missing a few little trim pieces. The engine is a typical cold blooded Merc that is typically hard to start, but quite reliable once it's going. It's real screamer and pulls up skiers with ease. Includes power trim, two 6 gallon tanks and a detachable ski tripod. I haven't had the boat in the water this year because the registration is expired, but I started it out of water with a pair of ear-muffs to make sure it ran. The trailer is in great shape and is ready to take the boat wherever wherever it needs to go. I am selling this because I no longer have time to play with it and I am trying to liquidate my toys to help me when I take off to college next month. I would like to see this boat go to someone who appreciates Checkmates as well as I do, as well as enjoys the pains of owning an old boat. The windshield is currently off the boat, and I can also include the original engine that was on the the boat (blown up) when I bought it -great for parts!

What engine was on it
I saw this when you first posted and thought you were in love with it. I understand how it goes.
Great looking boat

You're right! I put a lot of love into this boat and it has returned the favor with lots of memories! I hope the next owner will enjoy it as much as i did. If I could keep it I most definitely would but I'm doing all I can to stay away from college loans. It will be a sad day when she goes..

It originally had an 85, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the '72 was an 80 HP and in '73 they bumped it up to an 85 HP by changing the bore size. The 85 that was on it makes a great donor for parts..

Same year model as my MX-15 I am restoring. I thought something was wrong with my windshield but yours looks exactly the same. I wonder why Checkmate didn't extend the frame rail on each side of the windshield to meet the deck. It would have looked a lot cleaner. I've seen many other MX-15s with the dorky tall windshield. Our windshields look much better. Just wondering about the top speed you are getting with the 80 hp? I'm thinking with a light load you should be able to spin a 23 pitch since that engine has the 2.3:1 gear set instead of 2:1. Guessing it would top out around 50 mph with your motor.
